Hyundai Motor Company has decided to build a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell plant at its Ulsan factory. This marks the first time Hyundai is constructing a hydrogen fuel cell plant in South Korea.

On the 11th, according to the Hyundai Motor Company union and others, Hyundai has finalized plans to construct the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell plant this month. The location for the plant will be on the idle land of the transmission plant within Hyundai's Ulsan factory. The size of the plant will be approximately 42,975 square meters. The plant is set to begin construction this year with mass production targeted for 2028.

Once the hydrogen fuel cell plant at the Ulsan factory is completed, it will become the second hydrogen fuel cell plant for Hyundai Motor Group and the first in the country. Hyundai had previously built a fuel cell system plant in Guangzhou, China, in June 2023.

With the establishment of the plant, Hyundai will integrate chemical processes and assembly processes to establish a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell production system. The hydrogen fuel cells produced at the new plant are expected to be used in models such as the Nexo and the Elec City hydrogen bus.

After acquiring all of Hyundai Mobis's domestic hydrogen fuel cell business in February 2024, Hyundai is expected to further strengthen its hydrogen business. Additionally, they are aiming to expand their business based on the hydrogen value chain brand 'HTWO.'
