A fire broke out at Hyundai Steel's No. 1 blast furnace plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, after 300 tons of molten metal leaked onto the first floor railway.
The Dangjin Fire Department reported that 22 fire trucks and 41 members were dispatched early on the 28th in response to a report of molten metal leakage from the Hyundai Steel blast furnace plant in Songak-eup, Dangjin. They extinguished the fire around 4:09 a.m. after about 1 hour and 40 minutes. A Dangjin Fire Department official noted, "The Hyundai Steel's own firefighting team was already suppressing the fire and although the torpedo car was damaged, there were no casualties."
Fire authorities stated, "The molten metal leaked from the lower part of the container during the operation of receiving molten metal into the carrying machine. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation." The fire department estimated the property damage at 30 million won.
A representative from the Hyundai Steel labor union stated, "The leak occurred from the torpedo car carrying the molten metal, and this is the first such leakage accident in 10 years," adding, "There were no casualties, and the cause of the accident is under investigation."
