U.S. President Donald Trump’s news of imposing a 35% tariff on Canada acted as a negative factor. He also mentioned that tariffs of 15% to 20% may be imposed on other trading partners. This is a higher level than the basic tariff rate (10%) mentioned in April.

Over the weekend, President Trump additionally stated that he will impose a 30% reciprocal tariff on the European Union and Mexico starting August 1. Currently, Korea is subject to a reciprocal tariff rate of 25%.

Han Ji-young, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, noted that "the EU and Mexico are likely to prioritize diplomatic solutions like negotiations over retaliation against America’s 30% tariff." She added, "The stock market will face uncertainty over tariffs from the beginning of the week, but the impact will be limited to short-term volatility without damaging the index trend."

On that day, the exchange rate of the won against the U.S. dollar in the Seoul foreign exchange market recorded 1,376.20 won, down 3 won (0.22%) from the previous session.
