Shinhan Financial Group announced on the 22nd that it will participate in the development of a 20 megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Watari area of Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, as a financial arranger and primary lender.
The Watari BESS project is an initiative aimed at establishing an energy storage system that includes renewable energy to efficiently utilize electricity and enhance the stability of the power grid, with a total project cost of 4.9 billion yen (approximately 500 million won).
Shinhan Bank and SBJ Bank will jointly undertake the financial arrangements. SBJ Bank has decided on a lending of 1.225 billion yen (approximately 123 million won). Shinhan Asset Management will act as the sponsor to lead the project. This marks the first instance of a domestic financial institution participating as a financial arranger and primary lender in the Japanese BESS market.
