Representative Lee Jun-seok of the Reform Party noted on the 16th at the '2025 Virtual Assets Conference' held at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seocho-dong, Seoul, that he hopes South Korea becomes a space where money and virtual assets gather.
Lee viewed that strong regulations on virtual assets make the market unstable and hinder growth. He said, 'When virtual assets started to be transacted, South Korea had the second-largest and the number one exchange in Asia,' adding, 'It is regrettable that politicians who failed to recognize the value of virtual assets defined this as speculation, causing a lost opportunity for growth.'
He continued, 'As time has passed, it seems that not only the U.S. government but also globally renowned investors are beginning to recognize the value and stability of virtual assets,' adding, 'In this situation, what we need to do is to allow virtual assets and money to gather in South Korea.'
He urged that to lead in the era of 'virtual asset renaissance,' the political sector should actively pursue regulatory relaxation. He remarked, 'I think there might be a major shift in the perception of virtual assets during the second term of the Trump administration,' and stated, 'If a virtual asset renaissance comes, Korea must take the lead instead of being an object or target.'
In particular, he mentioned, 'Korea should adopt a comprehensive negative regulation in pursuing blockchain businesses,' adding, 'Although it is challenging for politicians to address policy demands, when they understand the characteristics of virtual assets, various implementations can be realized. I will work with other lawmakers to create change.'
