'Whale Star', a global IP with numerous fans both domestically and internationally, is a melodrama set against the backdrop of the anti-Japanese movement during the Japanese colonial period, depicting the story of a man, Kang Uihyun, who devoted everything to his country and a woman, Heo Sua, who became a bubble, risking her life to protect him. It is inspired by Andersen's fairy tale 'The Little Mermaid', and the popular webtoon of the same name is the original work. It received the Presidential Award at the 2021 Korea Content Awards, leading to immense expectations that surrounded the decision to turn it into a drama.
Earlier on the 25th, a report by OSEN confirmed that actor Choi Woo-sik received the script for 'Whale Star' and is positively reviewing the offer.
Choi Woo-sik's agency stated to OSEN that they are "considering the offer to star in 'Whale Star'" in their official position.
The character proposed to Choi Woo-sik is the male lead, Kang Uihyun. He is a character who, coming from a wealthy family that supported Japan, ended up studying in Japan on the recommendation of his father, a judge, but after witnessing the massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake, decides to become an independence activist. He runs a photo studio while taking care of espionage photos and code-breaking, embodying the character of an independence activist.
On the 30th, it was reported that Moon Ga-young has been cast as the female lead, Heo Sua.
A representative from Moon Ga-young's agency also stated, "We have received an offer for the role of Heo Sua and are currently reviewing it."
Heo Sua is a character working as a maid for a pro-Japanese large landlord in Gunsan during the chaotic 1920s in Gyeongseong, under Japanese rule. After an unexpected accident that causes her to lose her voice, she develops a special bond with Kang Uihyun, who transforms from a pro-Japanese background into an independence activist.
Meanwhile, as the new project 'Whale Star' has garnered high interest from domestic fans, attention is focused on the casting news of Choi Woo-sik and Moon Ga-young. Since the two have never collaborated before, there is great anticipation for what kind of synergy they will create.
'Whale Star' is directed by Heo Jin-ho, known for his exceptional direction in historical dramas such as 'Spring Day is Gone', 'August's Christmas', and 'The Handmaiden', and the cinematography is handled by Choi Yun-man, known for works like 'My Mister' and 'The Man from Nowhere'.
