Actor Gong Yoo has been given a suspended prison sentence after a woman in her 40s wrote multiple false comments, claiming that he was monitoring her.
According to the legal community on the 29th, the Daejeon District Court's Criminal Division 5 (Judge Jang Won-ji) sentenced the woman, identified as A, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation).
A is accused of leaving comments claiming she was being threatened and harassed during a live broadcast hosted by Gong Yoo on Jan. 14, 2020. It has been reported that she posted a total of 235 false comments and posts online until March 21, 2021.
The court stated, "The claims made by A are not only unfounded but also pose a serious crime as she continually spread false information over a long period. Even if the victim, being a public figure, would naturally attract public attention, the nature of the crime is very serious." It also noted that although A had previous convictions for similar offenses, the court considered that she admitted to the crime and promised to seek treatment at a hospital.
Meanwhile, Gong Yoo is currently filming a new Netflix project titled "Slowly but Intensely" alongside Song Hye-kyo. Written by the screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung, this major production has a budget of 80 billion won. It depicts the growth stories of those who, despite lacking resources in the tumultuous 1960s to the 1980s entertainment industry, dreamt of shining success.
