Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) and Naver's initiative is expected to expand public services of new AI technology through the collaboration of the country's top broadcasting media and a leading big tech corporations.
Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) (CEO Park Jang-beom) held a signing ceremony for a comprehensive business partnership memorandum in the AI field with Naver (CEO Choi Soo-yeon) on the 24th at Naver1784, located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and promised to collaborate to secure technology leadership and strengthen technological development capabilities.
KBS and Naver have decided to work together to secure the leadership and public nature of AI technology, as well as to develop advanced media technologies and derivative content and services based on AI. They will also jointly strategize and execute the global spread of K-culture content and seek progressive solutions to issues concerning AI-related intellectual property.
To this end, KBS and Naver will establish an 'AI win-win cooperation working group' and plan to discuss specific AI technology integration plans across the entire process of video content planning, production, distribution, and dissemination. Furthermore, they plan to create disaster maps by combining KBS's disaster content with Naver's AI technology, and to collaborate on universal public services, such as automatically generating subtitles and screen explanations for the hearing and visually impaired.
With KBS, which possesses world-class video content production capabilities and the largest audiovisual material in the country, teaming up with Naver, which has AI technology solutions and cloud infrastructure, a joint development of models that can be utilized in content areas is expected to enhance the protection of AI technology leadership and activate the AI ecosystem.
Park Jang-beom, president of KBS, said, 'This business agreement is a joint declaration that goes beyond simple technological cooperation, committing both companies to securing leadership in AI technology while preserving publicness.' He added, 'As a public broadcaster that has been producing and accumulating high-quality cultural content for a long time, KBS, along with Naver, a global tech leader that connects the world through technology and platforms, aims to build a Korea-style AI digital ecosystem and usher in a new era of AI services.' Park continued, 'With Naver and KBS together, K-content can stretch out more powerfully into the world, which can grow the nation brand of Korea and promote the growth of various industries together.'
Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of Naver, noted, 'Under the shared vision of securing AI technological sovereignty, this will be a very meaningful starting point,' adding, 'I am confident that we can create new value in the broadcasting and media ecosystem.'
Previously, KBS, which announced this year as the 'first year of AI broadcasting' during the establishment anniversary ceremony in March, plans to select collaboration tasks with Naver and engage in specific discussions.
KBS is considering plans to utilize Naver's video analysis service 'MAIU (Media AI Understanding)' to extract video content from traditional KBS programs such as 'Human Theater,' and to proceed with adaptation using Naver's generative AI 'HyperCLOVA X,' applying this approach to various KBS content. It is expected that this will enable the production of modern history web documentary dramas using generative AI trained on KBS's modern history archives.
In addition, in the global content field, they aim to engage international viewers through multilingual translations of K-POP lyrics and choreography explanations using AI technology. In the sports sector, they plan to provide sophisticated prediction content before each game starts, and in the reporting field, they will establish an AI-based real-time fact-checking automation system, thereby achieving AI innovation throughout the planning, production, and distribution process of KBS programs.
Meanwhile, on the 21st, KBS appointed six experts and scholars to form an 'AI Broadcasting Innovation Advisory Committee' to lead the era of AI broadcasting and contribute to the changes and developments in the future broadcasting ecosystem. The AI Broadcasting Innovation Advisors of KBS will be responsible for advising on AI-based content production, AI business and marketing, trends in AI research and technology and ethical policies, as well as legal and regulatory issues related to AI.
