31-year-old Chinese actor Zhang Yi Yang has been sentenced to death for the murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend.
According to reports from Chinese media on the 22nd, Zhang Yi Yang summoned his girlfriend in February 2022 but, upon receiving news of their breakup, launched a surprise attack with a folding knife he had hidden in the forest. The knife he wielded ruptured her carotid artery, jugular vein, trachea, and esophagus, and his girlfriend died from excessive bleeding.
Zhang Yi Yang stole his girlfriend's mobile phone, took a taxi home, changed clothes that he wore during the crime, and disposed of the murder weapon and related items in a reservoir to destroy evidence. He later attempted suicide in a hotel but failed and was arrested by responding police.
Zhang Yi Yang, who appeared in court, was sentenced to death by firing squad on Dec. 18, 2024. This has become the first case in the Chinese entertainment industry to receive a death sentence. Various media reported that the firing squad sentence was executed immediately after it was imposed.
Zhang Yi Yang debuted in 2012 through the variety show 'Happy Seven'. In 2015, he also released his first album as a singer and received the Best New Male Actor award in 2019. However, police stated that Zhang Yi Yang possesses a strong desire for control and is paranoid.
