The 'Architectural Space Traveler with a Reason' will present the 'Kim Joong-up Architectural Tour,' which offers fun beyond imagination.
In the first episode of the new MBC cultural program 'Architectural Space Traveler with a Reason' (abbreviated as 'Architectural Space'), an architectural journey will be undertaken to explore the masterpieces of 'Master Kim Joong-up,' who left a significant mark on the history of modern architecture in Korea.
Hong Jin Kyung and Kim Ho-young visit Kim Joong-up's works located in places we have unknowingly passed by in our daily lives. The masterpiece of Kim Joong-up, which boasts a unique round shape in the angular landscape of the city, is a building constructed in 1967. Hong Jin Kyung expresses surprise by stating, "Originally, the purpose of this building was 'this.'" Kim Ho-young admires the building's iconicity and the design that was about 50 years ahead, saying, "It must have been incredibly fresh at that time."
This building is said to have been designed to embody something, which amplifies the curiosity of Hong Jin Kyung and Kim Ho-young. The two examine various places to uncover the building's secrets and become fully immersed in a mysterious atmosphere that feels like entering a fairy tale. However, upon discovering the building's secrets, Hong Jin Kyung and Kim Ho-young wear shocked expressions. Jun Hyun-moo, who viewed the blueprints in the studio, is left speechless, saying, "Oh my," raising curiosity about what exactly Kim Joong-up's masterpiece embodies.
Next, Hong Jin Kyung and Kim Ho-young discover one of Kim Joong-up's masterpieces in a location frequented by citizens in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. The building, resembling a cathedral, was originally built as a department store but is currently used as a mart. Hong Jin Kyung, intrigued, asks, "What kind of mart building is this cool?" and searches for the 'point that attracts people' that Kim Joong-up intended to convey in this space. She speculates, "It seems like Master Kim Joong-up wanted to create a fun playground in this neighborhood," stimulating curiosity about what meaning is embedded in the building.
In the studio, architect Yoo Hyun-joon and historian Kim Jae-won highlight that the essence of Kim Joong-up's architectural life is contained in this building, capturing attention by adding architectural and historical interpretations. Jun Hyun-moo and Park Seon-young express surprise at discovering a masterpiece of the master in a place they had always passed by, saying, "How did we not know about this place?" creating anticipation for an unpredictable architectural journey.
'Architectural Space' is a new concept architectural talk show that unfolds stories crossing various fields such as history, culture, economy, art, and science through architecture. The first broadcast is scheduled for 9 p.m. tonight.
