Broadcaster Seo Hyun-jin, a former announcer, shared her concerns about her children's financial education.
On the 16th, a video titled "How to make our kids rich? Start with 'this' now" was uploaded to the 'Navi Seo Hyun-jin' channel.
On that day, Seo Hyun-jin said, "Today, I would like to talk about how and when to start financial education for my children, which many of you may be curious about," inviting Park Jeong-im, the head of CAPE Freedom Asset Management, to join the discussion.
Seo Hyun-jin shared, "Actually, this video started because one day (my son) came back from kindergarten and asked me, 'Mom, is our family rich or poor?' I felt like he must have overheard something, but I didn't know how to answer him."
She continued, "So I was flustered and thought I should say, 'We are poor, so we need to save,' so I told him, 'Mom has no money, we are poor.' Then he asked, 'Don't you even have a million won?' I said, 'No,' and he asked, 'Don't you even have 100,000 won?' I said, 'I don't even have 10,000 won,' and then he said, 'Wow, our family is poor..'" She reflected, "That night, as I was lying down to sleep, I wondered if that was the right response. Why did I say we were poor? What should I have said instead?"
In response, Park Jeong-im noted, "It's difficult to talk about whether someone is rich or poor based on any criteria, so ask 'What do you think?' There’s no right answer, but discussing that topic could lead to basic economic education through conversation."
Seo Hyun-jin stated, "There really can't be a model answer. I think many parents will receive such questions, and many may feel flustered like I did. The reason for this is that in the past, talking about money was seen as 'Why is a child asking about such things?' We grew up in that culture. However, I feel that we shouldn't raise children that way these days."
