The second season of 'Squid Game,' which swept the globe, was overlooked at the Emmy stage.
On the 15th (local time), the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the U.S. announced the list of nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, and the Netflix series 'Squid Game' Season 2 did not make the cut. It missed out on the drama award as well as all acting, directing, and technical institutional sectors, leading to an unexpected result.
Previously, American media had predicted that Season 2 would be nominated in major institutional sectors. In particular, Forbes anticipated that 'Squid Game' would be a strong contender in acting, production design, and visual effects, but the reality was quite the opposite. Some foreign media described this as "disparaging treatment despite global popularity," expressing their bewilderment.
This is in stark contrast to the achievements of Season 1 in 2022. At that time, 'Squid Game' had nominations in 14 institutional sectors at the Emmys, winning 6 awards including directing (Hwang Dong-hyuk) and lead actor (Lee Jung-jae), thereby elevating the status of Korean content. It was the most nominations among foreign language dramas in history.
However, analyses suggest that the evaluation of Season 2 was disappointing. Rotten Tomatoes rating was a score of 83, which wasn't bad, but the narrative, which was concluded as 'incomplete' within the structure leading to Season 3, did not receive high marks in terms of completeness. With Season 3 set to be submitted for next year's awards, a rebound is still possible.
Meanwhile, 'Squid Game' Season 2 was released in December of last year, and Season 3 was released in June of this year. The 77th Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on September 14 in the LA Peacock Theater.
