Members of Super Junior, who debuted 20 years ago, appeared on 'Twenty Century Hit Song'.
The 272nd episode of KBS Joy 'Twenty Century Hit Song', broadcast on the 11th, revealed the hit songs of Super Junior, who celebrated their 20th anniversary, along with the members' candid stories.
The broadcast featured MC Kim Hee-chul along with Eunhyuk and Ryeowook, who granted various stories from audition episodes to hidden behind-the-scenes moments during team activities.
At the beginning of the broadcast, Lee Mi-joo asked, "What is the secret to being together for 20 years?" Kim Hee-chul replied, "Eunhyuk said it was because he 'missed the timing to break up.'" Eunhyuk stated, "Actually, there were several times when we could have disbanded because we fought too much," and continued to explain how the 10 members living in the living room could not comfortably turn on the air conditioner because they were worried about Kim Hee-chul, who was living in the master bedroom. Kim Hee-chul revealed that he "really gave the members a hard time" and, in response, Ryeowook added, "I wrote 'actor's room' like this," creating a cheerful atmosphere.
The broadcast introduced the audition songs of the three members. Kim Hee-chul's audition song was Kim Jung-min's 'At the Top (2002)', and he explained that he originally sang 'Youth Gone Wild' and the national anthem for the audition, but hurriedly sang this song for site uploads. Eunhyuk, who watched Kim Hee-chul's audition video, jokingly said, "He came in 100% with his face", and when discussing Kim Hee-chul's first impression, he noted, "He looked rude, but surprisingly, when I met him, he really was rude," which brought laughter to the studio.
Eunhyuk auditioned with Shinhwa's 'First Love (2000)' on the recommendation of his close friend and current SM trainee Kim Junsu, while Ryeowook's audition song was Ko Yu-jin's 'Slow-Going Child (2004)'. Eunhyuk shared, "I actually auditioned twice," explaining, "I first auditioned in my first year of middle school, singing Jex's 'Com' Back'. Since I liked that song at the time, I sang it, but I failed that audition," and mentioned that a year later, he prepared all of his songs, including 'First Love', as SM songs and auditioned again.
The broadcast also introduced remakes of Super Junior's songs, which gained immense popularity. 'Happiness (2007)', 'Show (2019)', and 'White Love (At the Ski Resort...) (2022)' were revealed.
The top 3 representative hit songs that introduced Super Junior were also revealed. The 3rd place was 'Miracle (2005)', with Ryeowook stating, "At the time, one member stepped on my foot," and later, he appeared on the broadcast awkwardly gathering his shoes, confessing that he felt sorry for the members and cried because he thought he ruined the stage.
The 2nd place went to 'U (2006)'. Kim Hee-chul mentioned an experience where he had a pitch problem on stage while he was very busy with individual activities at the time, saying he thought, "I don't deserve to sing," and almost considered leaving the team, confiding to Eunhyuk that "I can't do this anymore." He later shared a story about how Eunhyuk ate the fried egg he wanted to eat on top of his kimchi fried rice, making him so angry that he kicked the table, as well as an incident when the members who were watching TV got into a fight, causing him to kick the ramen he was eating.
Kim Hee-chul continued, "Actually, there’s something I couldn’t express to Eunhyuk," and confessed, "I was sorry for not looking after you much until you went to the army. This makes me tear up, but I didn’t know how to express it," sharing his experience of crying on the last day of the 'Devil' concert. Hearing this, Eunhyuk commented, "As we get older, we get emotional about these things," wiping his eyes, while Kim Hee-chul also noted, "Whether it's the fans or the members, the way to express it is clumsy," showing a moment of shared emotion.
The coveted 1st place went to 'Sorry, Sorry (2009)'. Eunhyuk remarked, "What makes us feel like we're old is that there's no end to talking about the past," and concluded the broadcast by saying, "There are too many hit songs, but there are too many hit stories about us."
