Sayuri said, “I tried to lie to my son… I realized I couldn’t hide it for my whole life.”
Broadcaster Sayuri opened up about her past attempts to hide the reason for his father’s absence from her son Zen, confessing her honest struggles as a parent.
On the 11th, a deep discussion took place on the YouTube channel 'Oh Eun-young's Bucket List' under the theme 'An honest confession for my son.'
The video featured the story of a viewer who experienced conflict from abuse by their biological mother. The viewer, a parent of a high school senior, stated that they had been saying their maternal grandmother was “abroad,” but in reality, they had not been in contact for a long time. They expressed concerns about whether to tell their son, who is now becoming an adult, the truth.
Hearing this story, Sayuri cautiously shared her own experience. She said, “My situation is different, but I initially tried to lie to Zen about his father’s absence,” adding, “I even practiced making up an ordinary story, saying 'Actually, there is a dad, but we broke up before you were born' for Korean broadcasts, Japanese broadcasts, and even for the baby.”
However, she soon realized that the lie could not last long. Sayuri explained, “If I kept changing my story, I could get caught, so I tried to memorize the scenario in my head. My mother, who saw that, asked, 'Do you really think you could live your whole life lying?'” She reflected, “In the end, I’ll need to teach my child to 'live honestly,' so I thought it didn't make sense for me to be the one lying.” Ultimately, she decided to naturally convey to Zen from the start that there was no father.
Regarding the viewer's situation, Sayuri offered empathetic advice. She stated, “I believe it's perfectly okay to tell the truth when your son is a bit older and ready to accept it,” drawing from her own experiences. Dr. Oh Eun-young also noted, “It’s very relatable that Sayuri has thought of various scenarios, and it holds significant meaning to share such a difficult story,” offering words of comfort and support.
Meanwhile, Sayuri debuted on KBS2's 'Miss Korea' in 2007 and has won public affection with her unique, candid, and straightforward demeanor. In 2020, she gave birth to her son Zen using sperm from a Western donor via a sperm bank in Japan while not married, bringing attention to the new family structure of 'voluntary single motherhood.' Since then, she has continued to share her daily life with her son through various broadcasts.
