The second segment aired on MBC 'True Story' on the 10th was about Private First Class Won Hyun-sik, who became a person in a vegetative state just six months after enlisting. He enlisted in June 2023 and completed his driving specialty training, but after being assigned to duty, he was put in a role operating a 'portable surface-to-air missile,' which was different from his original position.
However, he suffered extreme stress while living with his superiors in a cramped and poor operational environment, enduring repeated verbal abuse and threats. In conversations with close friends, he repeatedly blamed himself and hinted at suicide several times.
Eventually, Private First Class Won underwent a military review and was assessed for discharge, but he had to return to duty. He even ended up hospitalized in a locked ward of a psychiatric hospital and, after three suicide attempts, lost consciousness due to hypoxic brain damage in December 2023 and has been hospitalized ever since.
The family is outraged by the military's handling that led to Private First Class Won's suicide. His father wept uncontrollably while holding his son, who has become a person in a vegetative state, saying he was sorry. Friends who are all 21 years old have completed their service and came to visit Private First Class Won, saying they hope to see him recovered soon.
After the video ended, Ji Jin-hee, choking up, said, "We must all watch together so that such a tragedy never happens to our children again." With his voice trembling and eyes red, he barely continued his commentary, evoking sympathy.
