Dr. Gong Geun-sik brought up the story of being misunderstood as an industrial spy.
In the episode of tvN 'You Quiz on the Block' that aired on the 9th, Dr. Gong Geun-sik, who became an aerospace engineer at the age of 52 after farming watermelons, appeared.
Dr. Gong Geun-sik stated that he farmed watermelons at 18, left for study in Russia at 42, and became a doctor at 52, which drew attention. Dr. Gong noted, "I dropped out in my second year of high school. I was not in a position to retake my studies, so I naturally helped my parents with the watermelon farming."
Dr. Gong Geun-sik said he took over the farming after his father suffered a brain injury. Dr. Gong stated, "Since my father could no longer farm, my mother and I started to farm watermelons together in earnest."
Dr. Gong Geun-sik mentioned that after about 10 years of starting watermelon farming and getting settled, he returned to study. Dr. Gong said, "I felt lonely because there were no peers around me."
Dr. Gong Geun-sik said, "After delivering watermelons, I went to Daejeon Station. For some reason, I was just drawn there. I saw a flyer for night school and went there that day. A teacher who was in the doctoral program in physics at KAIST happened to be there," explaining that he started studying again at the age of 28 through night school.
Dr. Gong Geun-sik said he had to give up watermelon farming due to damage from a typhoon and then decided to study in Russia. Dr. Gong noted, "I had two younger siblings who helped financially a lot. My mother did too. It was a big help while studying."
Dr. Gong Geun-sik said he was misunderstood as an industrial spy during his study in Russia. Dr. Gong mentioned, "The department I attended is closely related to the defense industry. The professors suspected me of being an industrial spy," eliciting laughter.
