Broadcaster Jang Seong-kyu revealed his thoughts on the background of his departure from 'Workman' for the first time. It has been reported that he received a notice of departure like Park Soo-hong and Choi Eun-kyung from 'Dongchimi', leading to late expressions of regret.
Recently, Jang Seong-kyu opened a new YouTube channel called 'Retired Jang Seong-kyu' with Go Dong-wan, the first producer of 'Workman', and released the first video.
In the video, he said, "'Workman' is a program I am very grateful for. I was always ready to step aside for my juniors," but noted, "However, when I suddenly received the notice of departure, I was a bit taken aback. Of course, they made a choice for growth, and I respected that."
He continued, "At that moment, I accepted it calmly, but for two weeks I kept thinking about it, and I felt depressed at night," adding that he did not express any opposing opinions to the production team at that time.
Jang Seong-kyu officially departed from 'Workman', with which he had been involved for about six years, at the end of May. At that time, he said, "'Workman' is the program that made broadcaster Jang Seong-kyu a reality," and added, "I hope my successor gets more views than I did. I will step back from here."
However, the truth revealed in a recently released YouTube video was somewhat different. Jang Seong-kyu effectively received a notice of departure and accepted it quietly, but he endured emotional turmoil for a long time.
Jang Seong-kyu commented on Eom Tae-goo's appearance in 'Workman Special', stating, "I watched the first episode. It was uploaded before my final broadcast," and added, "Actor Eom Tae-goo has a spin-off feel, while the main show is now led by actor Lee Joon. Lee Joon is also very entertaining," showing support for his successor.
Previously, Jang Seong-kyu had participated from the early days of 'Workman' and experienced a total of 253 part-time jobs, surpassing 1 billion cumulative views and creating the myth of 'part-time entertainment'. However, his sudden departure sparked disappointment among fans.
Meanwhile, Park Soo-hong and Choi Eun-kyung led MBN's 'Dongchimi' as a long-running talk show for as long as 13 years.
