Actor Kim Sun-min revealed that she lost 10 kg for the filming of "Spring of Youth."
On the 2nd, an interview with actor Kim Sun-min took place at the OSEN headquarters located in Hapjeong-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, ahead of the series finale of SBS Wednesday drama "Spring of Youth" (written by Kim Min-chul, directed by Kim Sung-yong, produced by Studio S Co., Ltd., FNC Entertainment Co., Ltd., FNC Story Co., Ltd., Monster Union Co., Ltd.). Kim Sun-min met with OSEN to discuss the preparation process for the project and share behind-the-scenes stories of the filming.
Kim Sun-min played the role of Gong Jin-goo, a genius drummer and core member of the band Tusa-gye. From the first scene, Jin-goo emerged as an indispensable genius drummer in the band, acting as a mental support for the members during the band’s crisis, and also exhibiting chemistry with various characters from Gyu-ri (played by Seo Hae-won) to Ja-young (played by Cha Cheong-hwa), shifting between excitement and laughter.
First, regarding the conclusion of "Spring of Youth," Kim Sun-min expressed, "The last episode airs today, and I really can’t believe it. I just performed as Jin-goo not too long ago, and I feel a significant sense of regret and sadness about this."
When asked what parts she felt regretful about, Kim Sun-min said, "Since it is a 10-episode series, I think if there had been more episodes, I could have shown more of Jin-goo’s character, and I felt disappointed that I couldn't show more chemistry after finally getting close towards the end of filming."
"Since 'Spring of Youth' was shot in advance, there is about a month left until airing after the filming has concluded. When asked about her current situation, Kim Sun-min replied, 'I managed myself. I lost some weight, consistently worked hard on exercising, and practiced acting regularly. I have always been diligent about self-management in my life. Gaining and losing weight is a freedom for me. I can gain weight quickly, and then lose it just as fast. I used to model, so I have lived with the number of my weight, making losing weight a habit. If I gain, I have to lose.'"
There is a saying that models don’t even need to step on a scale to know their weight. When asked if Kim Sun-min was one of those cases, she explained, "I can tell just by looking in the mirror. I only gain weight in my face, and if I have a double chin, I'm about 74 kg; if not, I am around 70-71 kg. While filming 'Spring of Youth,' I maintained between 67-68 kg."
"Originally, before starting the project, I weighed around 78 kg. After the project, I lost about 10 kg," emphasizing the strict dieting she went through for "Spring of Youth."
When asked if the production team requested such dieting, Kim Sun-min stated, "They didn’t comment separately. I thought Jin-goo should have a curly hairstyle and be slim in appearance. So, I felt that I needed to lose weight, and I dieted. However, the director always joked when I arrived on set, asking, 'Is Jin-goo in a lot of pain?' which made everyone laugh.
When asked about the visual points she paid attention to, she recalled, "Jin-goo's style was set to wear a long coat and the same outfit throughout. The synopsis mentioned his curly hair, so since it wasn't long enough to style that way, I actually have naturally curly hair. I thought it would suit him well, so a point I added in the costume was that I wanted to wear ear jewelry, which I did. I think that was one of Jin-goo's charm points."
When asked how she viewed "Spring of Youth," Kim Sun-min said, "I am not satisfied. I always feel like I am lacking. Although this is something I am saying now that filming is all over, if I could go back, I would probably work 2-3 times harder. Even though I put in a lot of thought into reactions, there is a sense of tension on set that makes it hard to express everything. I feel like I couldn't capture 100% of it on video."
She continued, "However, even if I do a lot of projects, I think I will still feel a lot of regret. I ask my acquaintances for feedback on my acting, and I often say that I think I should always feel a sense of inadequacy."
