Yim Siwan from 'Squid Game 3' shared his honest thoughts about his idol days, which were unearthed abroad.
On the morning of 2nd, an interview with Yim Siwan, the lead actor of the Netflix series 'Squid Game' season 3, took place at a cafe in Seoul’s Sokgyeong-dong.
'Squid Game 3' depicts Gi-hun, who returns to the game with his own purpose and loses his best friend, the Frontman, who sneaks into the game while hiding his identity, and the final fate of the participants who survived the cruel game. The first season premiered in September 2021, causing a global sensation and breaking all-time viewing records, captivating audiences worldwide. Season 2 was introduced in December 2024, and now the final series closes the chapter.
'Squid Game' season 3 recorded 60,100,000 views just 3 days after its release on June 27. It maintained the top position in Netflix's Top 10 across all 93 countries that aggregate Netflix rankings, including Korea, the United States, Japan, France, and Brazil. This marked Netflix's first work to achieve number one in every country during its opening week, proving an unprecedented box office success. Furthermore, it ranked 9th among Netflix's all-time series (non-English) during its first week and entered the top 10 most popular non-English series, with seasons 1, 2, and 3 all making the list. Additionally, season 2 ranked 3rd and season 1 ranked 6th in the global Top 10 for the past week, demonstrating a great deal of interest from global fans.
Yim Siwan plays a character with participant number 333, a YouTuber named Myungki, who caused significant losses for himself and his subscribers due to poor investments while hosting a cryptocurrency investment broadcast. Myungki is also the ex-boyfriend of another participant, Junhee (played by Jo Yuri), who learns of her pregnancy and tries to survive with her. Throughout this process, he transforms into a villain, ultimately crowned as the series' top antagonist.
Yim Siwan stated, "I never thought of Myungki as absolute evil, nor did I think he was entirely bad. I believe he was problematic due to his cunning ways, leading to bad outcomes, but at least his feelings for Junhee were sincere, and I approached the filming with that mindset," adding, "Is he a good character? A bad character? I maintained that confusion until the last scene was filmed."
As Yim Siwan's global recognition rose due to the 'Squid Game' series, his idol days became known to fans abroad. Recently, footage of him dancing with members from his time in ZE:A (Children of Empire) was revealed.
The post author noted, "In the end, the shocking thing was unearthed. Foreign fans are in chaos" and conveyed the sentiments from overseas fans, saying, "Please explain this situation in the video."
In response, Yim Siwan remarked, "If you're going to look it up, I hope you’ll take an interest in me dancing and singing normally rather than that," and he appealed, "I’ve lived hard," which brought laughter.
"Since the number of foreign fans has increased, is there anything among your past works you would like to recommend?" In response to this question, he said, "Since you’ve seen Myungki's character, I hope you’ll also check out 'Run On.' Unlike Myungki, it's a just character, and I think it could be a character and work that can be reconciliated after watching 'Squid Game.' Please don’t just look at these things on the dark web," he said with a smile.
Meanwhile, 'Squid Game 3' was released worldwide in over 190 countries via Netflix on the 27th of last month.
