Actor Park Bo-young expressed her thoughts on her representative image. From "Ppobly" to her youthful image, we could hear Park Bo-young's honest thoughts.
On the 29th, Park Bo-young passionately played the role of twin sisters Yu-mi-rae and Yu-mi-ji, who are different in every way except their faces, in the tvN weekend drama "Our Unwritten Seoul" (script by Lee Kang, directed by Park Shin-woo, produced by Studio Dragon and Monster Union, distributed by Highground).
"Our Unwritten Seoul" is a romantic growth drama about twin sisters who exchange their lives through a lie and search for true love and life, despite being different in every way except their faces. Concluding with 16 episodes, "Our Unwritten Seoul" maintained a steady upward trend after initially airing due to word-of-mouth, and it ended with praise for its relatable lines and the ensemble performance of the actors.
Park Bo-young challenged her first dual role since her debut, playing the twin sisters Yu-mi-ji and Yu-mi-rae, who exchange their lives. She heightened the immersion by accurately capturing the nuances and psychology between the characters, expressing the psychological gap between "Yu-mi-ji" and "Yu-mi-rae" flexibly by building the character through actions, expressions, and rhythmic breaths, thereby proving once again her title as a "trustworthy actress."
Fundamentally, Park Bo-young had to portray the twin sisters Yu-mi-rae and Yu-mi-ji. Moreover, portraying Yu-mi-ji pretending to be Yu-mi-rae and Yu-mi-rae pretending to be Yu-mi-ji meant that in the end, she essentially played four roles. It may have been difficult to play one character deeply, but by perfectly embodying four roles, Park Bo-young truly lived up to her name.
Amid a flood of positive reviews, Park Bo-young noted that a memorable response was, "The reaction that I appeared as Yu-mi-rae and Yu-mi-ji, not as Park Bo-young, stands out. The director showed me the edited version of the first episode, and I think the director, wanting to instill confidence in me who was worried about playing a dual role, showed it to me, but I actually felt less confident. That’s because I didn’t see Yu-mi-rae and Yu-mi-ji, but instead saw Park Bo-young. I was flustered because the tone I hear when I speak myself is different from the tone that comes out. I was surprised because the gap wasn’t that significant, but after watching the edited version, I felt I would need to create more difference in the latter part."
Park Bo-young continued, "For a while, I worked on many projects that conveyed 'it's okay' such as warm dramas, and 'Our Unwritten Seoul' was also an extension of that. I wondered how I could tell a better story, and it wasn’t easy to encounter such dramas. However, the biggest challenge was the dual role."
Successfully leading "Our Unwritten Seoul," Park Bo-young has also successfully completed a fan meeting and continues her active career. Known as "Ppobly," Park Bo-young exerts her influence on many fans with her bright and lovable charm. As she enters her mid-30s, concerns about the image of "Ppobly" may also grow.
Park Bo-young said, "Being bright is always a concern for me. I tried to play dark characters for about two years. The works 'Concrete Utopia' and 'Morning Comes to the Psychiatric Ward' were part of that choice for me, to quench my thirst. 'Our Unwritten Seoul' is similar, but now I feel like I've satiated that thirst to some degree and want to do a bright project. I feel like while doing darker roles, my basic tension has gone down, and now that I've conveyed a lot of messages, I want to work on a bright project."
Among the images representing Park Bo-young, a youthful appearance is also notable. Although she is 35 years old, her youthful look could convince anyone that she is a high school student. When asked if she was concerned about her youthful image solidifying, Park Bo-young replied, "Until about 3-4 years ago, I was worried about whether my youthful image would harden. I wanted to do various works, and I was anxious that if I'm only seen as bright and cute, what would happen? But now I am grateful. I hope people continue to see me that way."
