Dr. Oh Eun-young diagnosed Geum-jok with Asperger's syndrome.
On the 27th broadcast of Channel A's 'Recent Parenting, Like My Precious Child,' it was revealed that Geum-jok, a first grader, received a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome after showing outbursts and stubbornness.
That day, Geum-jok got up and said he didn't want to continue the board game he was playing with his dad and brother, claiming it was no fun. Geum-jok yelled, "It's no fun. I want to play on the pad," insisting on his choice.
When the promised time arrived, Geum-jok ended the board game his dad and brother were playing without permission. Dr. Oh Eun-young noted that "the child seems to have difficulty with social communication."
The mother said that despite Geum-jok taking ADHD medication for a year without significant changes, she decided to stop. She noted that she tried to approach Geum-jok in various ways but felt confused, stating that she didn't know the exact cause.
The mother pointed out, "Geum-jok sensed something was off since he was 5. The kindergarten teacher said that he kept the teacher under his control. When another child bumped into him, he said he would take revenge because they hit him."
The mother shared, "We have been visiting a psychological counseling center and have tried play therapy and testing, but there hasn't been much improvement." She also mentioned that Geum-jok does not follow along during rhythmic activities.
Even while playing, Geum-jok disturbed other children and teased them. Although his friends told him to stop, he did not listen.
Ultimately, his friends avoided Geum-jok but he followed them and disrupted their play. He particularly targeted one friend, bullying him. The teacher instructed him to apologize, but Geum-jok remained stubborn.
Dr. Oh Eun-young stated, "It seems to either be Asperger's syndrome or a social communication disorder." She added, "Social communication disorder puts more emphasis on language impairment. Asperger's syndrome makes interaction difficult. The child cannot understand metaphors and analogies contained in speech."
Dr. Oh Eun-young remarked, "Both Asperger's syndrome and social communication disorder are congenital issues," and emphasized that "both conditions are often accompanied by ADHD." However, she advised that symptoms caused by ADHD should not be the focus.
