'Over the Line Family' concluded its exploration of a total of 59 countries and 259 cities through its 89th broadcast.
In the 89th episode of 'Over the Line Family' aired on the 26th, the four MCs Ahn Jung-hwan, Lee Hye-won, Yoo Se-yun, and Song Jin-woo, along with American representative Chris, French-born Fabien, and British-born Peter, were in the studio, and the families who crossed the line in Vietnam, the United States, and the United Kingdom revealed popular travel destinations and experiences among locals in each country, sparking intrigue. Additionally, 'Over the Line Family,' which indirectly experienced the lives of 114 international families over the two-year period, announced its conclusion with this broadcast, bidding a heartfelt goodbye to viewers and the 'Over the Line Family' from each country.
First, the 'Vietnam Family' residing in Ho Chi Minh City, Lee Heon-gi and Lily, greeted each other after a long time and said, “We will go on a vacation to a popular resort among Ho Chi Minh locals.” After a two-hour bus ride, they arrived at their destination, 'Vung Tau,' which has become a popular weekend getaway for Vietnamese people and is recognized as a 'value-for-money resort.' Upon arriving at the 10 km long beach, they were attracted to the numerous parasols set up for day-trippers. However, they stated, “We don’t need a parasol since we’ve reserved a hotel,” checking into a '5-star' hotel, which surprised them with a price of about '140,000 won' for one night, including breakfast, featuring European-style decor and spacious rooms with a giant outdoor pool.
The 'Vietnam Family' emerged from the hotel and enjoyed traditional foods 'banh khot' and 'banh xeo' along with drinks at a local eatery for about 10,000 won. Later, they relaxed at a beach cafe that is hot on social media, where the total price for two drinks and a chocolate stick was about 9,900 won, showcasing cheaper prices than Ho Chi Minh City. Next, after visiting Vung Tau’s landmarks, such as ‘Christ the Redeemer’ and the former residence of the French Governor 'Bach Dinh,' they visited the Nirvana Temple featuring a 12-meter-long reclining Buddha and enjoyed a must-have foot massage for about 16,000 won per person. In the evening, at a famous seafood restaurant in Vung Tau, they savored grilled tiger shrimp, seafood tofu, and stir-fried noodles, indulging in fresh seafood. Contrary to the cast's predictions of “at least 40,000 to 50,000 won,” the final price turned out to be about 36,000 won. The total travel expense for the 'Vietnam Family' for their two-day, one-night trip in Vung Tau was approximately 250,000 won for two persons, and all cast members gave a 'thumbs up,' stating, “This is the best value destination we've seen!”
Next, the new 'American Family,' Shin Seul-ye and Mark, greeted their 8-month-old son Iaan. They declared, “Mark is a 'true New Yorker' born and raised in New York,” and stated, “We will calculate the total expenses needed for the recommended 'One Month in New York' course.” Regarding accommodation, which constitutes the largest expense for 'One Month in New York,' they said, “We recommend a 'hotel' because the rental conditions are demanding,” and upon checking Manhattan hotels with comparatively lower transportation costs, they found the price per night to be about 500,000 won, leading to a monthly estimate of 13 million won, which shocked the cast who had their standards significantly lowered from the 'value-for-money travel' in Vietnam. Following this, the 'American Family' toured New York’s landmark, 'Times Square,' and boarded the subway to check transportation costs, stating, “The fare for one subway ride is about 4,000 won, which is relatively high, but the 'MetroCard' for unlimited rides for 30 days costs about 180,000 won, and there is a well-established public bike system.”
Then, the 'American Family' entered a supermarket, confirming grocery prices aligned with those in Seoul. However, they collectively stated, “We can't cook every day while traveling in New York,” and headed to a New York steakhouse, stating, “There’s a must-eat food in New York.” Dining at a restaurant with a 140-year history and enjoying a 'porterhouse' steak with mushrooms and spinach garnishes, the total came to about 320,000 won, which made everyone sigh. Lastly, while checking leisure expenses, they purchased tickets for the Empire State Building observation deck, costing about 110,000 won per person. The 'American Family' concluded, “When we estimated the budget for accommodation at 13 million won, transportation at 200,000 won, food at 4.5 to 5 million won, and leisure expenses at 1 to 1.5 million won, the total expense for 'One Month in New York' is projected to be between 15 million and 20 million won.”
Finally, the 'British Family,' Hwang Yu-jin and George, who have been diligently caring for their daughter Ari, born last year, complained about their rapid physical exhaustion and headed to 'Wight Island,' George’s hometown, which is also where his parents live, for the weekend. Located about 120 km from London, Wight Island is a top choice for a city where Brits want to retire. Upon meeting George’s parents, the 'British Family' first stopped by 'Shanklin Village,' famous for its British-style cottages, relishing a fairytale-like atmosphere. They then enjoyed 'afternoon tea' at a British café, modernly renovated from a cottage, after which they walked along the beach, admiring the impressive striped sandy cliffs at 'Alum Bay.'
After the 'British Family' arrived at their in-laws' house, their mother-in-law stated, “I will make a special meal called 'Sunday roast' that we eat on Sundays,” preparing roast beef, roasted vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, and gravy. They enjoyed the 'Sunday roast,' a symbol of British home cooking, with the family, experiencing a special healing away from the exhausted daily life of raising children.
Meanwhile, 'Over the Line Family,' which first aired in 2023, concluded its journey around the world across 59 countries and 259 cities with this broadcast. Ahn Jung-hwan expressed his gratitude, saying, “I sincerely thank the 114 families of 'Over the Line Family' for introducing diverse cultures. It was a happy time to learn about life and existence through watching you all.” Lee Hye-won also noted, “Having lived abroad ourselves, we know it can be challenging,” encouraging all 'Over the Line Families' in the world with her heartfelt support, saying, “Keep fighting until the end!”
