Will actor Choo Young-Woo succeed in making a hit with four consecutive works this year?
The new tvN Monday-Tuesday drama 'Gyeonwoo and the Fairy' (directed by Kim Yong-Wan, written by Yang Ji-Hoon, planned by CJ ENM, produced by Studio Dragon, DEXTER Pictures, and I-O Content Group), which premieres on the 23rd, is based on a popular webtoon of the same name and tells the story of a boy destined to die and an MZ shaman girl trying to stop it, depicting the bold first love rescue romance of eighteen-year-olds, starring actors Cho Yi-Hyun and Choo Young-Woo.
Earlier, on the 17th, a press conference was held, raising curiosity about the casting stories of the actors as it depicts the genre of 'reciprocal rescue romance.' Director Kim Yong-Wan expressed, "Our work connects with stories of gods, so casting felt miraculous as if it were blessed by the gods. Actor Cho Yi-Hyun is so lovely, and I thought a lot about her acting deeply. Since Seong-A is also a shaman, I felt that the effort put into traditional rituals connects with acting, and I thought her passion and attitude resembled Seong-A’s on set."
Regarding the 'hot trend' that is Choo Young-Woo, Director Kim noted, "Actor Choo Young-Woo is too hot, but the basic premise is that Gyeonwoo must be loved at first sight by Seong-A. He had to pass this premise, and when I considered who it could be, Choo Young-Woo was perfect," adding, "It really felt like he stepped out of a comic book, and he acted with such instinct on set. I'm astonished and fascinated that this friend is gaining popularity in such a good project, almost like a lottery for our work, in a rising trend. I think he will really become the nation's first love."
Cho Yi-Hyun mentioned her reason for participating, saying, "First of all, I have been very interested in shamanism. At a time when it was popular, the script for 'Gyeonwoo and the Fairy' came to me. I'm a fatalist, so I started reading the script with that notion. Since Seong-A is a character leading a double life, I felt it would be an opportunity for me to grow as an actress if I performed well, which is why I decided to join. Additionally, as we have shown in the trailer, there is a scene where rituals are performed. To practice that, I learned the order of the ritual with a shaman advisor, asked about the way of speaking, and trained for quite a long time, more than three months."
Choo Young-Woo is set to play the role of Baek Gyeonwoo, a high school student born with a fatal destiny. After portraying characters such as a doctor and prosecutor in previous works, he will now be playing an archer. He shared, "I just watched the highlight video, and I want to keep watching it. I think it will be really fun. This is the first time I've seen the edited footage, and I think it will be enjoyable, so I hope everyone is looking forward to it. I feel like everyone on set gave their best, so I'm looking forward to it."
Choo Young-Woo talked about his character Baek Gyeonwoo, stating, "Gyeonwoo is a child born with a fatal destiny. Along with this fatal fate, he carries all kinds of misfortune. Misfortune follows me around, and when it comes close to me, it brings harm, so to avoid that, he lives like a hedgehog, raising thorns against others. I thought there were parts I could express well, and I really wanted to do it with the best director and seniors, along with Lee Hyun and Kang Yoon."
Protagonists Choo Young-Woo and Cho Yi-Hyun will reunite for the first time in three years since 'School 2021.' Choo Young-Woo remarked, "First of all, since we last met, Yi-Hyun has become prettier, and it feels like I'm the only one who has aged. Although it has only been three years, she has matured a lot. At that time, we didn't have much interplay, and the set was chaotic, so we couldn't communicate. This time we became friends, and I think the romance and comedic aspects fit well together."
Cho Yi-Hyun also expressed, "I'm glad to meet Young-Woo again in a project after a long time. We are the same age. In reality, the timing of our shooting was 4 to 5 years ago. Meeting in the early twenties and again in the late twenties, I felt that he is an attractive actor capable of showing a new side of himself. Second, since we are meeting for the second time, I felt a sense of stability and comfort, and I was grateful for that. Since we already matched up once, we understood each other's tendencies, so it was nice not to have to force connections and that we could break the ice naturally."
They were asked what kind of reactions they expect through 'Gyeonwoo and the Fairy.' Cho Yi-Hyun said, "I hope, as I feel, that actor Choo Young-Woo can become the nation's first love," while Choo Young-Woo expressed, "I hope it evokes sympathy, and as Yi-Hyun is originally a lovely actress, she truly comes across as charming. It seems her unique charm, which only she has, is sufficiently shown. I had a lot of fun shooting with Kang Yoon, and we talked a lot. I hope we get reactions like, 'So cute, well made.'"
Thus, Choo Young-Woo will present four works this year, starting with 'The Tale of Lady Ok,' followed by 'The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,' 'The Plaza,' and 'Gyeonwoo and the Fairy.' Expectations are building on how the trending actor Choo Young-Woo will captivate the home audience in 'Gyeonwoo and the Fairy.'
