Singer JK Kim Dong-wook, who said he would sue haters, ironically finds himself being accused
Singer JK Kim Dong-wook, who has stirred controversy with his far-right comments, ironically finds himself being accused just a week after declaring war on haters. Among netizens, reactions such as "Isn't this just the result of reaping what you sow?" and "An emotional rush that prioritizes feelings over truth" are spreading a sense of fatigue.
On the 12th, JK Kim Dong-wook announced on his social media that he would sue about 10 individuals who have hurled insults and made derogatory comments towards artist JK Kim Dong-wook online. He added, "I am currently gathering usernames and real names, and there will be no leniency," expressing a firm stance.
However, just three days later, on the 15th, it was revealed that he himself was also under accusation. Shin Seung-mok, representative of the People's Participatory Solidarity for Clearing Out Deep-rooted Corruption, formally accused JK Kim Dong-wook of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation by false facts).
Representative Shin stated, "The 'small fish' Kim Dong-wook, living in Canada, maliciously slandered as if President Lee Jae-myung and the presidential office spread false facts," explaining the reason for the accusation. He also criticized in strong terms, saying, "There is no distinction in status before the law, and I will not spare small fish. I will handle this according to the law without discrimination."
In fact, JK Kim Dong-wook has recently been outspoken about his far-right political views on his social media, continuously directing sharp criticisms towards the government and the president. Shortly after the election of President Lee Jae-myung, he posted a message hinting that "it seems I have to sing about the world we should not experience rather than love songs." He has also defended the controversy over the state of emergency regarding former President Yoon Suk-yeol, asserting that "it's not treason" and has expressed opposition to impeachment demands, clearly revealing his conservative support.
However, JK Kim Dong-wook is a Canadian citizen of Korean descent, lacking both military obligations and voting rights in Korea. As he becomes embroiled in the controversy over spreading false information about domestic politics and the president, public opinion toward him is turning cold.
Especially right after declaring his intention to sue haters, reactions to him being accused include, "This is the result driven by emotions rather than truth," and "He couldn't withstand criticism, sued, and now he himself is accused—he really got hit by a boomerang."
Some point out that there seems to be a lack of responsibility among public figures to maintain the boundary between freedom of expression and the spread of false information. A netizen expressed, "Ultimately, his own words are tightening around his neck," revealing the fatigue toward the controversy that Kim Dong-wook himself has fostered.
Meanwhile, JK Kim Dong-wook gained fame in Korea with ‘Foolish Love’ released in 2004 and has continued his activities while living in Canada. His extreme comments on various political issues have led to controversy, but there is growing concern about whether this accusation will lead to a change in the direction of his activities.
