Canadian expatriate singer JK Kim Dong-wook has been accused of spreading false information about President Lee Jae-myung and the current government.
Shin Seung-mok, head of the Cleanup of Corruption National Participation Alliance, stated on social media that on the 15th, a complaint was filed with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Networks against JK Kim Dong-wook.
The plan to accuse JK Kim Dong-wook had been announced earlier on the 10th. Shin emphasized regarding JK Kim Dong-wook's actions and statements that "it seems as if President Lee Jae-myung and the presidential office are spreading false information; petty Kim Dong-wook is maliciously spreading false information for slanderous purposes, violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Networks." He stated, "I do not inquire about or care for the status of the accused. I do not turn a blind eye to their status, and I will prosecute according to the law, upholding the wishes of the people."
In fact, JK Kim Dong-wook has continuously stirred controversy with false information and extreme right-wing political statements targeting President Lee Jae-myung and the current government and ruling party. On December 3 of last year, he defended former President Yoon Suk-yeol regarding the state of emergency, claiming it was not a coup, and has raised opposing voices against his impeachment.
The issue is that despite President Lee Jae-myung's election, JK Kim Dong-wook's aggressive activities on social media have not ceased. He has continuously raised conspiracy theories, denying facts such as the first phone call between President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump and the invitation to the G7 summit.
This has been criticized as effectively replicating and spreading fake news from extreme right-wing cyber trolls against the current government, ruling party, and President Lee Jae-myung. In response, Shin has accused JK Kim Dong-wook of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Networks and damaging President Lee Jae-myung's reputation.
Born in 1975, JK Kim Dong-wook was born in Korea and spent his childhood in Seoul, but his family immigrated to Canada when he was a high school student, obtaining local citizenship. As a result, JK Kim Dong-wook is exempt from military service and does not have the right to vote in Korea. There has been ongoing criticism regarding the political controversies caused by JK Kim Dong-wook, a Canadian national, spreading extreme right-wing fake news.
