Actor Park Jung-min's independent publishing house 'Mujae' is suffering from an unexpected backlash following its appearance on tvN's entertainment program 'You Quiz on the Block.' What began as a sincere project has ironically become a stumbling block, leading to a bitter reaction from internet users.
On the 16th, the publishing house Mujae posted a lengthy notice on its official social media. The explosive interest and increase in book sales following the broadcast were welcome, but at the same time, they expressed their difficulties, stating that they have been receiving prank calls and rude contacts unrelated to the publishing house via the phone number listed in the book.
Earlier, on the 11th, Park Jung-min appeared on 'You Quiz' and candidly shared behind-the-scenes stories of running the publishing house, drawing attention. At that time, he noted, "In preparation for the broadcast appearance, I printed a little more of the new book," and added, "It may sound like desperate promotion, but isn’t it better than having no books at all?" provoking laughter.
However, all of this began from a place of sincerity, not 'promotion.' Park Jung-min revealed, "My father struggled to read paper books due to his visual impairment" and explained the reason he first planned to produce audiobooks. He showed deep consideration for socially disadvantaged readers by stating, "I wanted to ensure that visually impaired readers could listen to the book first." Reflecting on his childhood with his father, Park Jung-min stated, "My father never threw away books. Even though he couldn’t see, the bookshelves were always filled with books," which left a poignant impression.
However, they are currently facing unexpected difficulties. The publishing house Mujae stated, "We are currently operating with only two people, and the weekend work and overtime for book duties and preparing for the book fair has been continuous," and added, "In this situation, it has become difficult to respond to phone calls, so we have reluctantly had to suspend phone responses." They kindly requested understanding, stating, "Instead, we have created a new email inquiry account and will respond as sincerely as possible."
In particular, Mujae added, "We will only accept the sentiment of the supportive gifts" and mentioned, "If you send support by purchasing our books, that will be the greatest strength to us." They also stated, "Currently, there are no hiring plans," conveying their refusal regarding recruitment inquiries.
In response, internet users expressed their regret, saying, "It was a really meaningful project; why are they being disturbed by such prank calls?" "I hope Park Jung-min's sincerity doesn’t get hurt."
"It’s painful that support has turned into a poison. If everyone could just show a little consideration…" "I guess this is why we shouldn’t put our numbers down. How bittersweet."
Meanwhile, Park Jung-min is not only running the publishing house but is also challenging various cultural endeavors. As he pledged, "We will do our best together for a more mature and relaxed company for the time being," there are increasing voices hoping that Park Jung-min's sincerity will reach more people.
