BLACKPINK's Jennie has won a court ruling in a distribution ban lawsuit against a man impersonating her biological father and a publisher.
According to a report by 'Woman Sense' on the 18th, the Uijeongbu District Court Goyang Branch ruled in favor of the plaintiff in the first trial of the distribution ban lawsuit filed by Jennie's side against Mr. A and publisher B in May. The court stated, "It is reasonable to view the claim that Mr. A is Jennie's biological father as false," and ordered Mr. A's published book to be completely destroyed, as well as prohibiting any mention of Jennie on social media, including KakaoTalk profiles.
This ruling stemmed from a bizarre incident. In September of last year, news spread online about an individual claiming to be Jennie's biological father, who allegedly published an AI novel based on Jennie's life. The individual described the relationship as if it were real, but in reality, he was entirely unrelated and not even recorded as her father on the family relationship certificate.
In response, Jennie's agency, OA Entertainment, took strong action. The agency stated, "False information in illegal publications impersonating the artist's father is being disseminated. This is a clear falsehood and is entirely unrelated to Jennie," and added that "we are proceeding with a strong response including a criminal complaint for defamation and obstruction of business against the distributor."
The ruling came amid reactions from internet users such as, "I never expected someone to impersonate Jennie's father," and "Is this excessive fan sentiment or malicious marketing... this must be punished," indicating that Jennie likely felt great embarrassment over the incident.
Additionally, there were reactions stating that "the legal action has drawn a clear line, which is significant," and it has become a precedent that raises awareness regarding fake news and cases exploiting an artist's privacy.
