Former After School member Gahi revealed her family's history of suffering from violence.
On the 16th, a new video featuring Gahi was released on the YouTube channel 'Newly Made CBS.' In the video, Gahi confessed about her lonely childhood and the violence she experienced at home.
That day, Gahi mentioned, “After living in Bali for about 5 years, it has been almost 2 years since I returned to Korea, which will be 2 months away. Korea is so good,” adding, “Life in Bali was slow. You know the saying about walking slowly. I lived a very slow life in Bali and learned a lot. I became extremely frugal and humble and filled with gratitude. I realized that everything I enjoyed until then was ‘too much, too luxurious.’”
Gahi particularly drew attention by mentioning her family history. She revealed, “There are some family circumstances. I have four siblings: an older sister, an older brother, and a younger sister, and I'm the third child. My mother gave birth to and raised my older siblings but had to leave me with my maternal grandmother because she suffered from a herniated disc. From the moment I was born, I grew up in the hands of my grandparents, and when I returned at 3 years old, I didn’t even recognize my mother, asking, ‘Who is this woman?’ There was no interaction. My mother was busy with the children while my grandmother raised me, and then a younger sibling was born. There was no time for anything. I felt unprotected during that process.”
Gahi also spoke about her family, saying, “My father was extremely accomplished. He was tall, handsome, and studied very hard, finishing graduate school at that time. But my mother was a housewife. So, my father had a very authoritarian, patriarchal personality.”
Gahi mentioned her childhood, stating, “My mother was busy raising the children and handling everything for my father, so honestly, I felt ignored. I was always lonely and always needed love. Here, no one listened to my story, and I entered the world of survival. So, I constantly sought attention from friends outside.”
Gahi revealed the domestic violence she witnessed, saying, “My father had a violent side. He was so patriarchal, with a wild and fierce personality. I still remember the day my mother was beaten by my father, and there was blood on the blanket, which I silently saw her washing in the bathroom.”
Gahi also confessed to experiencing violence herself. She stated, “There was a violent aspect, and my older sister didn’t show me affection as a younger sibling, and my older brother hit me. It felt completely normal to get hit. I have never experienced a tool that didn't hit me. I’ve been hit with sticks, hoses connected to faucets, belts, and hangers. Both my older brother and my mother hit me.”
Despite this, Gahi expressed understanding towards her mother, stating, “From my mother’s perspective, she seemed to have no spare time, and I didn’t conform. I wanted the love I received from my grandparents, but it wasn’t fulfilled, so I resorted to stealing. My mother would say I was a rebellious child who didn’t listen, and that led to only sighs.”
Gahi added, “My father was such a remarkable man that after failing in business once, his pride made it impossible for him to bounce back. He should have started with something small, but after decades without receiving living expenses, he couldn’t afford to be mentally or financially stable. Looking back now, I feel so sorry for him, thinking, ‘Could I have lived like that?’” Gahi shed tears while mentioning the violence and family history she experienced in her childhood.
