BTS's Jungkook wore a hat with far-right phrases and later apologized.
Early on the 14th, Jungkook posted on the official fan communication platform Weverse, "I feel heavy-hearted to be writing this after meeting you all again after a long time. I sincerely apologize for disappointing and causing discomfort to many people due to the phrase on the hat I wore during today's rehearsal."
Earlier, Jungkook appeared on stage as a special guest at J-Hope's 'HOPE ON THE STAGE FINAL' encore concert at Goyang Sports Complex in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, the day before. He conducted a private rehearsal before the performance, which was captured and spread by a fan's camera.
The issue was that the hat Jungkook wore during the rehearsal had the phrase "MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN" inscribed on it. This phrase is derived from U.S. President Donald Trump's "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" hat, which has since been referred to as the 'Trump hat' and is perceived as a symbol of far-right supporters.
Moreover, since Korea has a painful history related to the Japanese colonial period, wearing a hat with phrases praising Japan has led to criticism that Jungkook acted carelessly as an artist representing K-Pop.
In response, Jungkook said, "I deeply recognize that I disappointed and hurt people due to my shortcomings in wearing it without fully confirming the historical and political implications of the phrase. I’m just sorry. There’s no excuse for it under any circumstances. I was lacking and careless. I will think more deeply and act more carefully in the future."
He added, "I will humbly accept all criticisms and observations regarding my mistakes. The hat has been disposed of immediately. I apologize once again."
Meanwhile, Jungkook enlisted in the army as an active duty soldier on Dec. 12, 2023, and was discharged on the 11th.
Below is the full text of Jungkook's apology.
