Comedian Lee Guk-joo has confessed to a trauma related to public transportation.
On the 10th, a video titled "It's a lucky day in Tokyo; I don't have the house key, and there’s no seaweed with the raccoon?! Challenge of Japan's spicy flavor at level 30! The reason Lee Guk-joo couldn't take public transportation..." was uploaded to Lee Guk-joo's YouTube channel.
That day, Lee Guk-joo took a taxi to receive the key from a real estate agent because he lost the key to his house in Tokyo. He began, "My big problem is taking a taxi."
Upon arriving at the meeting place, Lee Guk-joo said, "Today, at least the taxi fare was covered. 100,000 won. Surely, taxi fares in Japan are very expensive. So I also want to try the subway, but while I have the desire to try, it's just not happening."
He explained, "What this is about is that I am somewhat afraid of the subway. Back in my first year of university, I used to take a bus passing Cheongnyangni from my house to school, and a woman bumped into my foot as the bus pulled away. My memory is that she bumped into my foot. I’m not someone who easily gets shaken. But I was bumped, so I was going to say, 'It's okay,' when suddenly she raised her hand and said, 'Crazy woman,' and slammed my head against the pole." This revelation shocked many.
He continued, "I was really beaten up that morning on my way to school. A week later, I was taking that same bus back home when an elderly person boarded, so I offered my seat. Suddenly, (my) bag was placed between their legs, and they started moving it around. They kept talking to me, and even though I responded, it was annoying. I didn’t reply, and then they just grabbed my bag and threw it down."
Lee Guk-joo recalled, "What can I do? I followed them off too. They were so grateful that they suggested going to karaoke to sing. I was 20 years old then. But, saying 20 years old, because I was born early, I was actually 19. I don't know how I looked, but I ran like crazy. It was probably the first time in my life that I ran that fast." He recalled the experience where he was also a victim of sexual harassment.
He said, "After that, I became afraid of being in a confined space and bumping into strangers. I gradually distanced myself from public transportation," adding, "But since I live here, I can't just keep taking taxis. I think I need to learn how to take the subway now. I’m sure you all have experienced failures at least once in your lives, right?" This remark evoked empathy.
