According to the Seoul Gangnam Police Station on the 9th, Lee Kyung-kyu was investigated for violating the Road Traffic Act. Lee Kyung-kyu is reported to have been caught driving after using drugs.
Lee Kyung-kyu reportedly arrived at his company in his foreign car, which is the same model as that of another person's vehicle, at an indoor golf practice range in Gangnam, Seoul, on the 8th. The owner of the vehicle suspected vehicle theft, but the police found that a parking management staff member mistakenly conveyed the information to Lee Kyung-kyu.
During the police investigation, Lee Kyung-kyu tested negative for alcohol but reportedly showed a positive reaction for drugs in a preliminary drug test, leading to controversy over the drug driving allegations.
As the controversy grew, Lee Kyung-kyu proactively sought to clarify the situation. In an interview with a media outlet, he explained, "The positive reaction for drugs in the police investigation was due to the medication I take for my panic disorder and cold medicine."
Lee Kyung-kyu also explained, "There are some ingredients in the panic disorder medication that can lead to a positive reaction in tests. I didn’t drink alcohol or take any illegal drugs," and stated that the mix-up regarding the vehicle was due to a mistake by the parking staff.
Lee Kyung-kyu has previously disclosed that he suffers from panic disorder multiple times. He revealed in the 2012 KBS 2TV variety show 'Happy Sunday - Men's Qualifications' that he was diagnosed with panic disorder, saying, "I've been taking medication for about 4 months. I feel like I'm going to die, so I pinch myself to cope."
At that time, Lee Kyung-kyu stated, "I feel anxious, lonely, empty, and have chest pain. But I have endured it alone because I thought that if I told someone, it would affect the program. Still, I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better after taking medication."
In 2013, he also mentioned in a variety show, "I've been taking panic disorder medication for 2 years, and if I miss even a single day, I experience panic disorder. However, I didn't skip meals." He has spoken out about the difficulties caused by panic disorder in various variety shows.
Regarding the allegations of drug driving, which Lee Kyung-kyu actively explained as 'taking panic disorder medication,' the police plan to continue their investigation. A police official noted at a regular briefing on the 9th, "Even if the medication is prescribed normally, there are regulations on drug driving in the Road Traffic Act that warn against driving under circumstances where it may impair driving ability," adding, "We plan to verify Lee's claim that he took medication as prescribed based on CCTV footage and witness statements."
There is attention on whether Lee Kyung-kyu's proactive explanations, after battling panic disorder for 14 years, can settle the 'drug driving allegations' without controversy.
