In the TV Chosun program 'Dad and I' broadcast on the 10th, Lee Geon-joo reunited with his sibling.
Lee Geon-joo, who was raised by his grandmother and aunt during childhood, learned only recently that he had a sibling. He mentioned that he found out about the existence of his two-year younger biological sibling only after growing up.
The sibling is currently adopted in France. Lee Geon-joo said, "I was adopted through a welfare agency right after birth."
Therefore, he cannot speak Korean at all. Lee Geon-joo said, "I might not be able to speak basic Korean comfortably, as there was no opportunity to learn it like I can’t speak French."
When asked if he wants to meet his sibling, Lee Geon-joo replied, "I really want to meet them," and expressed, unlike his feelings towards his parents, "I always wanted to meet my sibling. If I meet them, I want to say, 'I'm so sorry for what you went through even though I didn’t know, you've worked hard.' I want to hug them," while tearing up.
Thus began the long journey of 9,400 kilometers. After a 14-hour flight, Lee Geon-joo arrived in France. He first learned about his sibling's whereabouts through social media. Before moving to Lyon from France, he met with an interpreter due to the language barrier with his sibling for communication.
Throughout the trip, Lee Geon-joo said, "I’m also unpredictable; I’m curious about what they do and if they are eating well," adding, "I’m worried rather than curious about various things: if they’ve been well, if they’re eating properly, if they are sick, what they are doing." He kept repeating the phrase 'I missed you' in French on the train while writing a letter.
Lee Geon-joo arrived at the train station in Lyon, where his sibling was, with a mix of excitement and heavy feelings. At that moment, he saw his sibling from a distance and showed tears. Luckily, his sibling smiled brightly upon seeing him. They shed tears while embracing for the first time after such a long wait, finally meeting their blood relative after many days. The sibling cheerfully said, "Don’t cry," and expressed, "I’m happy to meet you, and I’m even happier that you came here."
