"Has g.o.d passed its prime?" Mayor Joo Nag-Young of Gyeongju is facing backlash for his remarks diminishing the popularity of the group g.o.d.
From 6:30 p.m. on the 9th, a recording of the KBS 2TV entertainment program 'Immortal Songs' (shortened to 'Immortal') was held at the helicopter pad next to the Administrative Welfare Center located in Bodeok-dong, Gyeongju.
The stage of 'Immortal Songs' that day was held in the format of an outdoor concert. Before the main recording, a preliminary recording took place, which was attended by Mayor Joo Nag-Young of Gyeongju. However, during this, Mayor Joo Nag-Young shocked the audience by remarking, "g.o.d is from our generation (of singers), but has it passed its prime?"
That day's recording featured a number of singers that transcended generations, including g.o.d, Hwasa, Ateez, Lee Seung-Yoon, Song So-Hee, Jung Dong-Won, Jo Jaez, Kiki, and Psy. As such, K-pop fans gathered at the venue were numerous. The comments made by Mayor Joo, who even took the microphone, shocked the fans present.
g.o.d debuted in 1999 with the song 'To Mother.' They achieved great popularity with numerous hit songs such as 'Lie,' 'Road,' 'Observation,' 'Longing,' 'I Love You and Remember,' 'Friday Night,' 'One Candle,' 'Sky Blue Balloon,' 'Where You Should Be,' '0%,' and 'Ordinary Day.' They swept the Grand Prize at music award ceremonies in 2000 at KBS, 2001 at KBS and SBS, as well as the Golden Disk Award.
In response to Mayor Joo Nag-Young's remarks, g.o.d fans and audience members present at the event are criticizing him by sharing this news on social media. Ultimately, the hashtag "#ApologizeMayorJoo" surged to trending status on X.
