Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu (65) has spoken out about his investigation by the police for driving after taking drugs. However, the police are expected to continue their investigation, noting that there is a possibility that charges may be applied.
Lee Kyung-kyu reportedly arrived at his company in his foreign vehicle, driving the same model as another person's car around 2 p.m. on the 8th.
The car owner reported a suspected vehicle theft, and the police determined that a parking management officer mistakenly delivered the wrong vehicle to Lee Kyung-kyu due to a mix-up. However, it is known that Lee Kyung-kyu tested positive for drugs in a preliminary urine test conducted during this process.
In an interview with a media outlet, Lee Kyung-kyu stated, "The positive drug test result from the police investigation is due to the anxiety medication and cold medicine I am taking. Some components in the anxiety medication can also yield a positive result in tests. I have explained to the police that I took cold medicine, and this has been resolved," refuting allegations of illegal drug use.
As Lee Kyung-kyu personally clarified his position, it appeared that the allegations of driving under the influence of drugs would be settled as a misunderstanding. However, a representative from the Korean National Police Agency stated at a regular briefing on the 9th, "Even if the medication is prescribed normally, there are regulations in the Road Traffic Act that say one should not drive if there is a risk of being unable to operate a vehicle due to its effects."
According to Article 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 'Prohibition of driving when fatigued or otherwise impaired,' it is stipulated that drivers should not operate vehicles if they are in a condition that could impair their ability to drive normally, due to factors such as fatigue, illness, drugs, or other reasons, in addition to being under the influence of alcohol.
The representative added, "We plan to verify Mr. Lee's claims that he was taking medication that was prescribed properly based on CCTV footage and witness statements."
