Actress Jang Sin-young is returning to the small screen after three years following an affair controversy.
Recently, at Sangam MBC, a production presentation for MBC's new daily drama 'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun' was held. The event was hosted by announcer Lim Hyun-joo, with actress Jang Sin-young, Seo Ha-jun, Yoon Ah-jung, Oh Chang-seok, Lee Ruda, and Producer Kim Jin-hyung in attendance.
'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun' (planned by Jang Jae-hoon / directed by Kim Jin-hyung / written by Seol Gyeong-eun / produced by MBC C&I) is a story depicting the desperate revenge of a woman who confronts a conglomerate in the name of her only daughter after the victim becomes the perpetrator. Before its release, there has been a lot of interest in the leading actress 'Jang Sin-young.'
Earlier, Jang Sin-young's husband, Kang Kyung-jun, was identified as an affair partner last year and was sued for 50 million won in damages, ending the trial with a mutual agreement. Eight months after the controversy, in August of last year, Jang Sin-young revealed, "I decided to forgive for the sake of the children."
Following this, Jang Sin-young began her full-fledged return to broadcasting starting with variety shows. Thus, her return to her 'original job' as an actress begins with 'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun.' Moreover, it marks her first acting role in three years.
As a result, there was a focus on Jang Sin-young at the site. When asked about her feelings on her return after a long time, she said, "I'm quite nervous and excited. I started with the pressure of 'I just need to do well.'" She continued, "While filming, I gradually started to gain energy. I was quite nervous and wondered, 'Can I really do this role well?' But as I read the script, I found myself getting more and more absorbed in it. I thought, 'This role could be one that satisfies me as an actress.'"
As it was her first project post-controversy, her attitude toward acting was particularly special. "I'm grateful to the director for giving me the opportunity of playing Baek Seol-hee. I was really thirsty for acting, and when this opportunity came about, I thought, 'I really need to do my best.' I filmed each scene with sincerity, thinking this might be the last for the drama and my acting. I think viewers might feel that if they see that. Rather than focusing on my personal matters, I hope they view it as a character or content of our drama."
Jang Sin-young plays Baek Seol-hee, a single mother with a bright and kind personality. After losing everything due to an accident involving her daughter, she ultimately decides to seek revenge. She explained, "This character is a mother to Lee Ruda's character. She was living very happily, but after her daughter’s unintended accident, she loses everything. The victim daughter becomes the perpetrator, and I resolve to take matters into my own hands to seek revenge for my daughter."
Regarding her synchronization with the character, she said, "Seol-hee is very down-to-earth, easily approachable to others, and always tries to help when there are difficulties. She is a very kind person, so being around her brings energy. Comparing myself, I would say about 50%. I also try to live positively, just like her. As I engage with Seol-hee, I think to myself, 'I should try to work hard like this.'"
In particular, Director Kim Jin-hyung noted his affection for casting Jang Sin-young, saying, "From the moment I received the script, having watched her performances for a long time, even with a long break, her image came to mind every time I read the lines." He added, "This casting was done intuitively with those who came to mind. Most of them were my top choices. I had no burden due to the controversy at all."
Meanwhile, MBC's daily drama 'The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun' will premiere today (9th) at 7:05 p.m. The story will unfold as a woman's desperate revenge to protect her only daughter in a world where a victim transforms into a perpetrator.
