It has already been 3 years since the eternal national MC Song Hae (late) passed away.
Today (8th) marks the 2nd anniversary of late Song Hae's death. He left this world at the age of 95 on June 8, 2022, at his home in Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The broadcasting life he left behind was the culture of a generation and a legend that warmly decorated the weekends of many people.
He was originally from Jaeryeong County, Hwanghae Province, and studied vocal music at the Hyeju Arts School. After fleeing to the South during the Korean War, he began his broadcasting activities as a singer. Song Hae made his stage debut through the ChangGong Musical Theater in 1955 and later expanded his broadcasting and acting activities, including the drama 'Sing Sing Sing' (1981).
As a versatile figure crossing the roles of singer, actor, and comedian, he flourished in comedy programs representing that time, such as 'If You Smile, Good Luck Comes,' 'Classic Comedy Theater,' 'Comedy Dispatch,' and 'Humor No. 1.' He also shone in various movies including 'The Ridiculous 007,' 'The One-Suit Gent,' 'Mother is Strong,' 'Marriage Operation,' and 'Just Before Fortune.'
Above all, from May 1988 to May 2022, Song Hae served as the MC of KBS1's 'National Singing Contest' for about 35 years, receiving national love. His signature opening line, 'National~ Singing Contest~,' represented Sunday afternoons and brought delightful laughter to the public.
His cheerful persona as a broadcaster and sincere attitude in connecting with the public served as a role model for younger generations. Known as 'Mr. Sunday,' he maintained the longest-serving MC position and became a strong support and life mentor for many trot stars, including Song Gain, Lim Young-woong, Lee Chan-won, Jang Min-ho, Jeong Mi-ae, and Jeong Dong-won.
In particular, Lee Chan-won reminisced about his broadcasts with late Song Hae, expressing, 'I miss the duet stage we shared together. We also did the last broadcast together.'
Late Song Hae solidified his status as a national MC by sweeping various awards, including the Special Contribution Award at the Korea Entertainment Arts Awards, the Achievement Award at the KBS Entertainment Awards, and the Achievement Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards. He was also listed in the Guinness World Records as the 'Oldest TV Music Competition Program Host,' gaining global recognition for his achievements.
Three years have passed since he departed. Although his presence on stage can no longer be seen, the voice that resonated every Sunday and his warm smile remain vividly in the memories of many.
