After its public release on the 30th of last month, ‘ONE: High School Heroes’ has recorded the top spot for new paid subscriptions on Wavve and is experiencing explosive popularity, drawing significant interest from viewers regarding the actor group that is the main contributor to the drama's success.
‘ONE: High School Heroes’ is a high school action drama where ‘Eugyeom’ (Lee Jeong-ha), the top student suffering under his father's oppression, and ‘Yungi’ (Kim Do-wan), who seeks to utilize his natural fighting talent, form a masked group called 'High School Heroes' to unleash their suppressed anger and overturn the hierarchy of school violence.
Based on the original Kakao Webtoon ‘ONE,’ it maximizes character chemistry and adds bold action direction to provide deeper immersion. In particular, the webtoon’s distinctive quick pacing, realistic school life settings, and the dramatic interactions of various characters are garnering a strong response from viewers.
Lee Se-ho plays ‘Choi Ji-hyuk,’ a second-year troublemaker at the school who not only awakens ‘Eugyeom’s’ fighting instinct but also brings him a thrill within it, successfully conveying the unique worldview of this work to the audience.
In episodes 1-4 that have been released, Choi Ji-hyuk, a symbol of oppression and violence, wields a bamboo sword on the rooftop, which he considers his palace, employing various methods to break not only Eugyeom's body but also his spirit. However, witnessing Eugyeom, who does not crumble even in the face of his violence for the first time, Choi Ji-hyuk, devoted to evil, attempts to subdue him by relentlessly swinging the bamboo sword that is both a weapon and his own identity.
Ironically, the bamboo sword of Kendo, which emphasizes mental discipline and etiquette, is used by Choi Ji-hyuk to maximize his own violence, and his charismatic presence, having dominated the hierarchy of second-year students, dramatically showcases the dark and absurd reality of Yeonsung High School.
Additionally, Choi Ji-hyuk's line, “What kind of fight is a match? Winning is a fight even if you get hit a hundred times, as long as you crack someone’s head with a brick once,” penetrates the worldview of this drama and urges a deep reflection on violence.
Lee Se-ho perfectly embodies the villain role that is both vile and hypocritical, generating raw action sequences infused with rough breaths and emotions. His bamboo sword strikes, unleashed in a state of lost tranquility, provides a sense of realism that elevates immersion in the story.
Moreover, his character's portrayal of the repetitiveness of school violence and its intergenerational transfer sufficiently provokes expectations for how brutal and explosive the unfolding high school action drama will be.
Lee Se-ho, who debuted in the film ‘The Shepherds,’ has showcased his exceptional character acting in various genres and platforms, including the films ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North,’ ‘The Outlaws 3,’ ‘The Gentleman,’ ‘Cross,’ ‘The Last Battle,’ ‘Nocturnal,’ and the dramas ‘Hwarang,’ ‘Rebel,’ ‘The Deliveryman,’ ‘Parasyte: The Gray,’ ‘The Fiery Priest 2,’ and ‘Trigger.’
In particular, in the drama ‘The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call,’ he left a strong impression on viewers by portraying ‘Captain Lee Hyun-jong,’ who was injured in an armed group's attack while deployed in South Sudan, and in the film ‘Revelations,’ he took on the role of ‘Jeong Hwan-soo,’ the son of a pastor at a pioneer church and a prospective lead pastor for a new church, showcasing a real yet impactful character performance.
Meanwhile, ‘ONE: High School Heroes,’ featuring Lee Se-ho, is exclusively released every Friday at 11 a.m. only on Wavve.
