Actress Shin Seul-ki expressed her gratitude before the conclusion of The Haunted Palace.
With only two episodes remaining in the SBS Friday-Saturday drama The Haunted Palace, Shin Seul-ki left a strong impression in the home theater with her stunningly contrasting performances, ranging from a cheerful noblewoman to the possessed Choi In-seon. She depicted the excitement of a woman in love with Gang Cheol-yi (played by Yook Sung-jae) in an honest yet charming manner, and when she was possessed, she expressed a bizarre expression and a cold, bloodthirsty gaze, vividly portraying a character full of resentment, thereby heightening the tension in the drama.
Through this project, Shin Seul-ki, who took on her first historical drama challenge, received praise for her successful acting transformation and once again meaningfully filled her filmography. He has firmly established himself as an actor, continuously expanding his spectrum through various transformations regardless of genre or character. In particular, each appearance left a strong impact and lingering effect, capturing attention on the acting path he will take as an actor in the future.
Below is the full Q&A with Shin Seul-ki
1. Please share your thoughts on the conclusion of The Haunted Palace.
After about eight months, The Haunted Palace, crafted by all the actors and staff, is now approaching its conclusion, and I feel a great sense of loss letting go of this work. However, I learned a lot during the process of working alongside the seniors and creating scenes together, and it was a valuable time that allowed me to grow further as an actor.
2. Since The Haunted Palace was your first historical drama, what was it like to act in it? If there were any specific points you focused on, please share.
Since The Haunted Palace was my first historical drama challenge, it was initially difficult and unfamiliar to express speech and actions appropriate for the time period. Because of that, I think I focused more on entering the character's heart and situation. I wanted to portray the character convincingly even in an unfamiliar environment, and that process became another form of growth for me. Last summer and winter, the weather felt particularly hot and cold to me, but I think I also learned some know-how to handle bad weather. (laughs)
3. What was the atmosphere like on the set of The Haunted Palace?
This is my second encounter with senior Kim Ji-yeon since 'Pyramid Game', and she always took care of me warmly and supported me a lot, which was really reassuring. Just her presence on set was a great help, and I think it allowed me to act comfortably. Senior Yook Sung-jae also always provided cheerful and positive energy despite the cold and hot weather, making the atmosphere on set joyful and really nice. It was a learning experience for me to see the two seniors doing their best even in difficult situations.
4. Is there a scene that stands out the most to you? What made it memorable?
The most memorable scene is the moment I get possessed again by the one-legged ghost in the latter part. Personally, I found the concept of 'possession' unfamiliar and challenging, but when I got possessed a second time, I actually felt 'this is fun.' As I immersed myself in the situation and tried my best, I had a new experience realizing that possession acting could be so exciting and enjoyable. It was a very fresh and special moment for me.
5. Currently, actress Shin Seul-ki is appearing in both the weekend drama For Eagle Brothers and the mini-series The Haunted Palace, both receiving great love, earning her the title of 'Weekend Fairy.' What has it been like to act in two different genres?
Since the melodrama and historical drama have different tones, speech, and movements, it wasn't easy to switch between the two genres at first. However, as I acted, I realized there are similar points between the two characters. The whole process of thinking about how to express the two characters differently, as well as what similarities there are, became a significant learning experience for me. As both 'For Eagle Brothers' and 'The Haunted Palace' have been loved by many, I am really grateful to have earned the title 'Weekend Fairy.'
6. Finally, please say a few words to the viewers who loved The Haunted Palace and Choi In-seon.
I was really happy being 'In-seon' for about eight months. I am pleased that the work created through everyone's hard work has come out to the world and received much love from the viewers. I thank everyone who has watched and supported The Haunted Palace. There are two episodes left until the conclusion, so please enjoy watching until the end and look forward to it. Thank you.
