(Following interview ②) Actress Kim Da-mi shared her thoughts on working with Son Suk-ku in “Nine Puzzles.”
On the afternoon of the 5th, an interview marking the conclusion of the Disney+ original series “Nine Puzzles” with leading actress Kim Da-mi took place at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
“Nine Puzzles” is a mystery thriller that delves into the secrets of a series of murders that resumed with mysterious puzzle pieces, featuring Lee Na (portrayed by Kim Da-mi), the only witness and suspect ten years ago following her uncle’s murder, who has now become a profiler, and Han Saem (portrayed by Son Suk-ku), a detective from a violent crimes team who remains suspicious of her.
When asked about her collaboration with Son Suk-ku, Kim Da-mi explained, “He made it very comfortable for me. After meeting with the director together in the beginning, there were many character-related aspects we had to create together, so he suggested, ‘If there’s anything difficult, let’s talk about it,’ which made it easy for me to reach out before going into it or whenever I had questions. I often called him saying, ‘How about this? What do you think?’ Since we spent a lot of time together on set, the only person I could lean on as an actor was Suk-ku oppa, so I relied on him a lot and enjoyed filming.”
She said, “I felt that no matter how I performed, oppa always communicated and connected with me. There was a lot of character analysis and flow that I didn’t expect, and I sensed that he was an actor filled with curiosity. I thought it was a good opportunity to learn from him because he seems to consider various perspectives, wondering whether to try this or that.”
Kim Da-mi, who had many conversations with Son Suk-ku, said, “While discussing how we became close and integrated into each other’s characters, the director incorporated some key dialogue points along the way, such as feelings of jealousy. I added elements like Han Saem’s love for detective novels and how Lee Na oddly integrates into that world. I think those points came out naturally as I became closer with Suk-ku oppa.”
Particularly, various interpretations about the relationship between Yoo Na and Kim Han Saem are pouring in. In response, Kim Da-mi remarked, “I really feel it’s peculiar, and I initially thought in various directions. I believe it ultimately depends on the viewers’ perspective. In the end, I thought of it this way: even while bickering, it seems like we are each other’s only ones. This might appear romantic to some, but that wasn’t the intention. I think it’s a strange, enigmatic relationship.”
She continued to explain why Yoo Na could only sleep comfortably at Kim Han Saem’s house, saying, “Yoo Na believes Han Saem’s house is safe, so she thinks she can only sleep there. The reason Yoo Na profiled Han Saem from the beginning was to determine whether he was someone she could truly trust. She eventually realized, ‘He is a truly trustworthy person,’ and that’s why she could sleep at his house.”
