(Following Interview 1) Actress Kim Da-mi revealed that while reading the script for “Nine Puzzles,” she suspected Kim Sung-kyun was the culprit.
On the afternoon of the 5th, an interview was held with Kim Da-mi, the lead actress of the Disney+ original series “Nine Puzzles,” at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
“Nine Puzzles” is a mystery thriller that delves into the secrets of a serial murder case that starts again with the only witness and current profiler Lee Na (played by Kim Da-mi) from 10 years ago and detective Han Saem (played by Son Suk-ku), who continues to suspect her as the culprit. Kim Da-mi plays Yoon Na, the only witness and suspect after her uncle was murdered 10 years ago, who becomes a profiler to uncover the secrets of that day.
Due to its genre characteristics, “Nine Puzzles” is bound to immerse viewers in the process of finding the true culprit. In response to the question, “Did you receive many questions about the culprit?” Kim Da-mi noted, “Many people around me asked. From little things like, ‘Is there a reason why Lee Na’s nail color changes?’ to every single line, they asked a lot about the meaning behind it.”
She said, “Some people asked if the one hanging the laundry in the back might be the culprit. They mentioned various people as the possible culprits. I thought, ‘Wow, they can think that much.’” She also added, “I changed the nail color to match the outfit. There was absolutely no intention behind it. I just did it differently according to the clothes, but I wondered if that could mean something. It surprised me that people saw it that way.”
In particular, Yoon Na was portrayed as the true culprit in the early part of the series. In response, Kim Da-mi explained, “Actually, I tried to express the ambiguous points. Since she has to forget her memories, I didn’t want to express outwardly that she was shocked. I wanted to show how confused she was about how to react. I discussed with the director about subtle eye movements, where to look, and how much to act like the culprit while walking.”
When asked how she felt when she learned the identity of the true culprit, Kim Da-mi said, “I couldn’t figure out who the culprit was either. At first, I thought it was Team Leader Yang Jeong-ho (played by Kim Sung-kyun). I think I had that thought. I was surprised. When the culprit was revealed at the end, I had completely ruled him out, but then I thought, ‘That could be a possibility,’ and I remember being very surprised to see that.” She added, “In the beginning, I was like, ‘Who could it be?’ and then thought, ‘Could it be Team Leader Yang Jeong-ho?’ I had a feeling, but it turned out to be wrong.”
Regarding the reactions that the ending was empty, she remarked, “In fact, at first, I don’t think Lee Na wanted to believe the culprit until the end. I felt she had a lot of affection and trust for that person. In a way, she was pushing him away emotionally. So, from that point of view, I think Lee Na’s human side and emotions emerged. Although she couldn’t catch the culprit or prevent the crime, I think this was an action possible for Lee Na’s character.”
On the other hand, regarding not being able to catch the culprit or stop the crime, she explained, “In fact, Lee Na didn’t want to believe until the end that he was the culprit. I felt she had a lot of love and trust for that person. In a way, I think she was emotionally pushing him away. So, perhaps in that point, we can see Lee Na’s human side and emotions. Although she couldn’t catch the culprit or stop them, I think that was an action possible for Lee Na’s character.”
When reactions poured in saying that the ending hinted at a season two due to finding another puzzle, she responded, “We have not talked separately about season two.” She added, “The ending could be similar to mimicry or following someone else, or perhaps there really was someone doing this together. I don’t fully understand the world, but it seems that a similar incident is occurring in that world. I think it was a very open ending.”
When asked if she has plans to appear in season two, she replied, “I’ll consider it.” She noted, “Season two has to be different from season one and must align with the parts that the audience liked a lot. Those are points we might have to think about.” (To be continued in Interview 3.)
