Lee Jae-po, who gained attention after transitioning from comedian to political reporter, has been fined for fraud.
On the 3rd, Judge Park Jong-woong of the Incheon District Court's Criminal Division 16 sentenced Lee Jae-po to a fine of 10 million won for charges of fraud.
Lee Jae-po is accused of deceiving an acquaintance, referred to as Person A, into handing over 20 million won at a pension in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, in November 2020. Lee reportedly told Person A, "Due to COVID-19, my wife's clothing store is struggling," and borrowed 20 million won, but investigations found that he planned to use the money for personal purposes rather than for the store's operation. It was revealed that he had neither the intent nor the ability to repay the money in the first place.
The court pointed out that the nature of the crime is bad and noted that he did not reflect during the probation period and committed the crime. However, considering that he acknowledged his wrongdoing and reached an agreement with the victim, and that he has not been punished for similar crimes before, the court issued this sentence.
Meanwhile, Lee Jae-po became active as a comedian after being selected in the MBC comedy contest in 1983, and he later acted in dramas such as "The Fourth Republic," "Eun-sil's Story," and "Era of the Outlaws." Since 2006, he has transitioned to working as a political reporter.
