Broadcaster Ann Sun-young reflected on her struggles during menopause and offered advice.
Ann Sun-young posted a video titled "This is how I overcame that period" on her YouTube channel "This is Ann Sun-young" on the 29th.
In the video, Ann Sun-young stated, "Recently, over the past 1-2 years, I suddenly became dazed while working, feeling tingling in my hands and feet, sometimes lying down and crying during live broadcasts, and my emotional fluctuations became really severe, physically my condition declined so much that I had to take a break from live broadcasting for about 6 months because it was extremely hard both physically and mentally during that period."
Ann Sun-young noted, "I think I have to prepare for a new debut in the remaining years of my life, which is not something that actresses or those in that field usually say. So, I felt that what I am doing now is right."
While discussing menopause, Ann Sun-young mentioned "heart palpitations," stating, "There are physical changes and hormonal changes that come with middle age. When asked, the symptoms vary. The common symptoms are flushing and palpitations."
She also talked about sleep, saying, "Sleep must be really good. I cut out caffeine and gave myself some rest time. Whether you are a working mom or a stay-at-home mom, if you are at home, you can't rest. Just lying down feels like resting, doesn't it? It’s not. You see chores, hear the washing machine signaling that it's done, deliveries come, and when the doorbell rings, it’s the bill coming, and you see dust on the curtains, and you can't rest your head or body."
She continued, "You need to set a time for complete rest. Whether you are a working mom or a stay-at-home mom, if you are a middle-aged woman going through this phase, you must give yourself 1-2 hours of rest time each day," adding, "I walk and get some sunlight, taking about an hour for a walk, and there are various free workshops available like at community libraries and municipal libraries. You must go outside of the house."
She advised, "If you have symptoms, it is important to recognize that this phase has arrived and make an effort to acknowledge it by seeing a nearby specialist."
Previously, Ann Sun-young disclosed that she experienced premature menopause and burnout. Last year, in Channel A's "Best Friends Documentary: 4-Person Table," she shared changes after becoming a property owner, stating, "I started having a mental illness." She continued, "When building the property, there were logistics disruptions, COVID-19, and the war in Russia. If anyone contracted COVID-19, the construction would stop," adding, "I experienced burnout syndrome and premature menopause."
Ann Sun-young remarked, "Without passion, I felt like a corpse; I didn't want to do anything. That held me back and made me depressed. I cried during meetings," specifying, "Psychologically, it was burnout syndrome, and physically, they said it was stress-induced premature menopause. Though my physical age is in the late 30s, my ovarian age came out to be 55, which is 7 years older than me," highlighting her surprise.
Having experienced premature menopause, Ann Sun-young expressed, "I thought menopause was something far off, but experiencing the symptoms was shocking," adding, "I felt like my life as a woman was over and it made me sad. I realized I needed to treat myself better."
