Singer Seo Joo-kyung, featured on 'Exclusive World,' shared her tumultuous life story.
In the broadcast of MBN's 'Exclusive World' on the 29th, singer Seo Joo-kyung, the protagonist of the hit song 'Bold Woman' that swept the 1990s, made an appearance. Seo Joo-kyung expressed her delight in front of the camera with her still crisp and refreshing voice.
Seo Joo-kyung, a singer with 35 years of experience and the head of her own agency, attended a stage featuring her artist and junior singer Kang Mun-kyeong. Singers Lyn and Hwanhee greeted Seo Joo-kyung warmly. After receiving her juniors’ greetings pleasantly, Seo Joo-kyung stayed to watch the performance.
Seo Joo-kyung shared her connection with Kang Mun-kyeong, saying, 'I told her I would give her six months. Let's take time to understand each other. And I will nurture you.' Seo Joo-kyung encouraged Kang Mun-kyeong, advising her to 'sing without holding back.'
Seo Joo-kyung's singing career began at the age of 19. However, she did not achieve instant fame. Seo Joo-kyung remarked, 'Master Song-hae told me, 'You're a wonderful singer, Seo Joo-kyung.' When he called for me to buy him a drink, the applause was overwhelming. Around when I turned 29, I started receiving invitations nationwide.'
In other words, Seo Joo-kyung's singing life changed due to a delayed resurgence. She recalled, 'My song is listed in the Korea Guinness Book. It has been about 19 years since its release. It's a song included in karaoke favorites. It has only been out of the top five hit songs once and has not declined over the years. It's a song that has never fallen off the charts for 19 years,' proudly stating it is a national song.
At one time, Seo Joo-kyung was thought to have a fortune of 7 billion won. However, she is also a regular mother living happily with her son. Seo Joo-kyung shared, 'I am in the third stage of polycystic kidney syndrome. I don't know when it will progress to stage four. It could escalate suddenly. About 85% of my kidneys are not functioning well. I have to keep in mind that I have around 15-18% functionality,' revealing her struggle with polycystic kidney syndrome and the risks associated with pregnancy due to uterine fibroids. Her son Sun-woo was born after those challenges.
However, Seo Joo-kyung's hardships did not stop there. She said, 'I started bleeding without explanation and kept murmuring to myself; people told me that I wouldn’t live past forty. It was frightening. I need to sing, there are countless things I should do. So, a great elder took the stage in a trance. I prayed while sacrificing a cow and a pig.'
In other words, she received divine revelation at 29 years old. Seo Joo-kyung expressed, 'I didn’t want to become a shaman. I prayed to be allowed to sing, promising to do good deeds and return all the money I made from singing.' She continued, 'So, I prayed and neatly wrapped offerings to place under the temple Buddha,' sharing her heartfelt commitment to continue her career as a singer.
