CEO Kang Yoon-sun of the world’s top 10 hair salons with annual sales of 300 billion won has revealed her life as a millionaire contributing to society through the creation of many jobs.
In the episode of 'Seo Jang-hoon’s Neighbor Millionaire' aired on the 28th, co-produced by EBS and E Channel, Kang Yoon-sun, known as the 'Sam☆ of the beauty industry' and representing a hair franchise with 182 branches and 3,500 employees, appeared. Her hair salon, which has steadily grown over the past 40 years, was selected as one of the world’s top 10 hair brands (source: Wella) in 2005, continuing its reputation beyond Korea to the world. Annual sales reach 300 billion won.
Born in a poor neighborhood without a silver spoon, Kang Yoon-sun started her journey in beauty at the age of 17 to make a living, opening her first store in Donam-dong, known as 'the mecca of trendsetters,' at the young age of 22. Because she had no money, she incurred a large amount of loan shark debt from the beginning, but as she candidly shared, "The interest was my lifeline. I had to work." Her high-interest loans became a strong motivation for her. Thanks to her determination, demonstrated by spreading the word on the streets and putting up banners with sincere messages for customers, her beauty salon rapidly increased its number of branches.
Kang Yoon-sun, who was on a successful path as a hairdresser, laid down her scissors after 10 years and fully ventured into management. During a time when women were criticized for simply driving, Kang Yoon-sun taught her employees leadership and human relations to equip them with competitiveness. Additionally, in 1993, secretly selling her house for 200 million won, she took 19 employees with her to study in England. This was a turning point in her life and laid the foundation for establishing a beauty academy. Currently, she is training the future hair designers through systematic education at her 8-story academy in the heart of Cheongdam.
Kang Yoon-sun confessed her unique philosophy about money, saying, "I spend money on education or expanding stores." Even now, she focuses on nurturing talent through education and creating jobs by expanding stores. Seo Jang-hoon expressed his respect, saying, "Even just continuing to create jobs is a tremendous contribution to society." Finally, Kang Yoon-sun revealed her dream of creating a '500-year corporation,' stating, "I hope that the hair salon continues to exist even without me." In response, Seo Jang-hoon teased, "I’ve heard of the 500 years of the Joseon Dynasty..." adding humor to the conversation.
