(Interview ②) Comedian Lee Su-ji cited her husband as her driving force for activity.
On the morning of the 26th, a round interview with comedian Lee Su-ji took place at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Lee, who has been receiving great love for her character content such as ‘Shubly Mom’ and ‘Jamie Mom’ since opening the ‘Hot Issue’ channel last January, shared that when asked if she has a feeling of ‘this could work’ while conceptualizing a character, “That’s not really the case. I always show it to my husband first.”
She explained, “I ask my husband, ‘Is there any consensus?’ but when it comes to characters like Shubly Mom that men don’t know about, there are times I wonder, ‘Is this right?’ So I ask various people. ‘SNL’ has many staff, so when the atmosphere on set feels good and they laugh, I think it could work.”
Lee Su-ji’s husband is well known as her ‘No. 1 fan’ who has followed her since her days in Daehangno. Lee emphasized, “He’s still a fan.” When asked if her fan husband can make objective judgments, she acknowledged, “He says everything looks lovely,” but added, “He accurately tells me things related to work, saying, ‘This isn’t fun’, ‘This is fun,’ and ‘I hope you don’t do this on the show.’ Recently, while joking with juniors, I often say, ‘How about you try this? In exchange for a grant of 70:30.’ But the juniors seem to find it difficult to accept, and I was scolded again yesterday.”
Especially when it comes to working as a comedian, the most important thing is likely confidence. When asked if this is also influenced by her husband, who always sees her lovingly, Lee stated, “It really is. Before marriage, I worried a lot about how to expose my belly. However, after marriage and giving birth, my confidence grew, and the first time I exposed my belly was during a parody of Wang Ganda on ‘SNL.’ I was embarrassed, but I thought, ‘This works?’ And since my husband loves every aspect of me, I’ve gained confidence to try various things more freely.”
When asked if her child watches Lee Su-ji’s content, she responded, “The child is too young to understand my job. When asked, ‘What does mom do?’ the response was that I’m a soldier. Someone must have shown them the ‘New Recruit’ series because they referred to me as ‘soldier’ and ‘loyalty.’ I guess they don’t realize what my job is,” she shared, bringing laughter.
