Kim Bo-tong and Yoo Seung-hee, writers of 'Oh My Ghost Clients,' revealed interesting behind-the-scenes insights about the work before its first broadcast.
On the 22nd, the team of MBC's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Oh My Ghost Clients' (written by Kim Bo-tong and Yoo Seung-hee, directed by Lim Soon-rye and Lee Han-jun) released an interview with the screenplay writers, Kim Bo-tong and Yoo Seung-hee.
'Oh My Ghost Clients' is a comedic fantasy action drama that depicts the adventures of a labor lawyer who sees ghosts as he resolves labor issues. The team's main character, Oh Mu-jin (played by Jung Kyung-ho), along with his sister-in-law, Na Hee-joo (played by Seol In-ah), and video creator Go Gyeon-woo (played by Cha Hak-yeon), will engagingly solve labor issues assigned by the ghosts, captivating viewers.
The profile of the writers also raises expectations. Kim Bo-tong, who sharply illuminated the reality of military service in the OTT drama 'D.P.,' presents the labor reality from a labor lawyer's perspective this time. Yoo Seung-hee, whose film 'I Can Speak' received praise for blending heavy history into human comedy, participates to articulate the challenging theme of labor in a bright and light tone, adding balance to the drama. The synergy of these two trusted writers foreshadows the birth of a drama that combines empathy and humor.
Meanwhile, Kim Bo-tong and Yoo Seung-hee revealed various behind-the-scenes details such as character settings, writing highlights, and casting impressions, capturing the attention of drama fans.
First, Kim Bo-tong created the character of Mu-jin, a labor lawyer, by adding the setting of seeing ghosts to a profession that is not well known to the public. Kim said, 'I thought the viewer's interest would increase when the protagonist is placed in an ironic situation. So, I envisioned Mu-jin as a character who works for workers as a labor lawyer but lacks self-awareness. I hope viewers will also change alongside Mu-jin as he resolves the ghost-assigned industrial accident cases, despite lacking awareness of workers and professional ethics,' and lightheartedly added that he came to name the character Mu-jin because he likes the singer Imu-jin and works as a labor lawyer.
Yoo Seung-hee began her first drama writing experience by leveraging her experience from the film 'I Can Speak.' She noted, 'The focus while writing the script was the method of delivering the message. No matter how good the theme and message might be, it easily gets overlooked if it's not entertaining. I also focused on this aspect when writing the film 'I Can Speak.' I believe that the heavier and darker the theme is, the more we need to clear the way for accessibility and lower the threshold. So, I aimed to keep 'Oh My Ghost Clients' as bright and cheerful as possible, incorporating comedy and humor into the characters and situations,' explaining that the drama will deliver a heavy resonance behind the laughter.
She also discussed the preliminary research conducted to enhance the script's details. Kim Bo-tong stated, 'I consulted the Certified Labor Attorney Association regarding what tasks labor lawyers perform, what they can and cannot do. The finalized draft was then reviewed by the Certified Labor Attorney Association again, and the detailed parts were revised through a consulting labor attorney as we prepared for filming. While there are some exaggerated elements to maintain dramatic interest, I worked hard not to tell a story that is disconnected from reality,' revealing the meticulous scriptwriting process reflective of reality.
The two writers both stated, 'The casting of Jung Kyung-ho, Seol In-ah, and Cha Hak-yeon breathed life into the script.' Yoo Seung-hee shared, 'After hearing the casting news, I felt as if the characters Mu-jin, Hee-joo, and Gyeon-woo sprung to life. Furthermore, while incorporating the strengths and charms of the three actors into the script, the drama was able to become richer. Since I had confidence and faith that the actors would portray them well, I was able to try various ideas,' increasing curiosity about how their ideas were reflected in the characters and how well the actors embodied them.
Kim Bo-tong expressed gratitude towards the actors, saying, 'I am truly grateful to them. Since it was a story that could be somewhat heavy, I thought it would not have been easy for them to participate. It was only after the cast was confirmed that I could hear the voices of the characters and see their expressions. 'Mu-jin’s (Mu-jin, Hee-joo, Gyeon-woo) is a character completed with actors Jung Kyung-ho, Seol In-ah, and Cha Hak-yeon,' raising expectations for the characters colored by the three actors.
How will the story of 'Oh My Ghost Clients' convey the heavy labor reality through lively characters resonate with viewers? The two writers' interview elevates expectations for 'Oh My Ghost Clients,' which will have its premiere on the 30th at 9:50 p.m.
