A broadcaster and former national rugby player has been sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison for attempting to sexually assault and injure his ex-girlfriend.
On the 21st, the Seoul High Court's 4th Criminal Division (Director General Kwon Hyuk-jung, Hwang Jin-goo, Ji Yeong-nan) sentenced individual A to the same term of 2 years and 6 months for charges including attempted rape and ordered the completion of a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program.
The court explained, 'The basic crime of rape was attempted and the victim has received 50 million won as a deposit from the defendant.'
'However, the defendant, who is a former rugby player, committed indiscriminate assault, which likely caused the victim severe mental distress,' it added. 'The defendant is giving excuses and making the victim suffer more, and the victim is requesting a severe punishment.'
Previously, individual A was accused of attempting to sexually assault and injure B, his ex-girlfriend, at B's home in Gangnam, Seoul, on June 10 of last year, resulting in a concussion and other injuries. When B resisted, charges of property damage were added for damaging the bathroom door and a mobile phone. B claims that A came into the house, demanded sexual relations, and assaulted her.
Therefore, police referred individual A to the prosecution for detention on charges of attempted rape and property damage on the 25th of the same month. The prosecution, after receiving the case, determined that A's charges were valid and moved forward with the trial.
Meanwhile, individual A is a former rugby player who represented the country at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has served as a coach for a corporate team, and has actively appeared on broadcasts, gaining popularity.
