My Little Old Boy's Lee Dong-gun, who has opened a café in Jeju, has transitioned into a dessert hotspot.
On the 18th, the SBS entertainment show 'My Little Old Boy' (hereafter 'Miwoo-Sae') featured the story of Lee Dong-gun, who recently opened a café in Jeju.
On that day, Lee Sang-min visited Lee Dong-gun's café located in Jeju. After seeing the interior, which boasts a full of emotions, he admired it and asked, 'I bet the rent is quite high.'
Lee Dong-gun noted, 'I didn't spend a lot of money. The rent is discounted for café owners in Aewol, and that is becoming more prevalent.' When Lee Sang-min commented, 'It's not four buildings,' Lee Dong-gun replied, 'I'm renting it. I did the minimum interior, preserving as much of the property as possible without making significant changes.' This made Lee Sang-min remark, 'With the right promotion, this could blow up.'
Meanwhile, Yoo Jung-soo, a space planner with 60 owned cafes and an annual revenue of 70 billion won, drew attention. Lee Dong-gun introduced him by saying, 'He is the one who gives advice on everything.' Yoo Jung-soo revealed his reason for visiting: 'I came to make sure the coffee that will be offered to customers is up to standard.'
Last year, Lee Dong-gun presented coffee to Yoo Jung-soo, but it was assessed as 'the expected taste.' After tasting the coffee again after a long time, he praised it, saying, 'I came to say something, but when did you make it this good? There’s no gritty or bitter taste from the coffee grounds at all.' Relieved, Lee Dong-gun appealed, 'I practiced a lot.'
Yoo Jung-soo rated it, saying, 'I give it a 92. Out of 100, I give it a 92.' He also added, 'To improve those 8 points, increasing the sand temperature slightly more than now and adjusting the boiling tempo more deeply will result in an even more perfect coffee.'
However, Yoo Jung-soo's praise didn't last long. He stated, 'Of course, the coffee is good, but these days, desserts are crucial for cafés to succeed.' Lee Dong-gun agreed, saying, 'It’s essential,' but he encountered issues with the desserts he developed being either too sweet or taking too long to prepare.
Upon tasting the dessert, Yoo Jung-soo frowned and said, 'I can't eat this date. It's too sweet. It might be okay if I take one small bite, but if I eat it like a regular snack, it feels overwhelmingly sweet.' A flustered Lee Dong-gun asked, 'Should I take out some honey?' However, Yoo Jung-soo replied, 'There's no way to reduce the sweetness of the date. For now, let’s taste the next menu and judge the existence of this menu together.'
'I am confident in the second dessert,' Lee Dong-gun said, presenting a dessert of pistachio pancakes served with kaymak. It took a total of 11 minutes to make it, and after tasting it, Lee Sang-min pointed out, 'It’s too thick.'
Most importantly, while checking the time, Yoo Jung-soo commented, 'Only the kaymak is good,' adding, 'At this pace, the café will fail. If you make one pancake at a time like that, you'll serve only four customers in an hour.'
He then suggested to the slow-moving Lee Dong-gun, 'How about introducing a waffle machine? You could produce the pistachio pancakes using the waffle machine. The biggest advantage of a waffle machine is that anyone can make them the same way. It can also cook both sides evenly. When you flip it, the shape can get damaged and cracks may form, but with a waffle machine, as long as you do the batter right, it cooks evenly.'
On the day of the soft opening, Lee Sang-min, pointing out that Lee Dong-gun had only informed friends in Jeju through a fan café, remarked, 'That shouldn't be the case,' emphasizing that he had 350,000 followers and helped promote using his social media.
At this time, Ku Bon-seung, who was residing in Jeju, joined to assist Lee Dong-gun. The three of them wrapped up their local promotion and returned to accelerate the opening preparations, and Lee Dong-gun presented the desserts that had been revised based on the suggestions. Lee Sang-min praised, 'It's very delicious. Kids will love it,' while Ku Bon-seung also commended, 'The cream flavor is very unique.'
At last, the café opened. As customers lined up to enter, Lee Dong-gun became flustered, but those who tasted the coffee expressed their satisfaction by saying, 'It’s delicious.' That was short-lived, as unexpectedly more customers arrived, leading to a buildup of orders. Eventually, Lee Dong-gun apologized to customers, saying, 'We are a bit slow, sorry,' while he began to speed up. Feeling more at ease, he also took the time to explain the coffee meticulously.
In particular, customers who tasted the waffles that Lee Dong-gun had put his heart into said, 'I want to eat this again,' and 'It’s refreshing inside. This place is a dessert hotspot.' Moreover, just then, a group of customers appeared, and one of them expressed, 'We canceled three appointments to come here. I spent three hours just to see these three people,' touching everyone’s hearts.
