Singer Baek Cheong-gang has overcome his battle with cancer and moved viewers with his return to the stage of 'Immortal Songs' after six years.
The 706th episode of KBS2's 'Immortal Songs,' aired on the 17th, was themed '2025 Oh My Star.' On this day, Baek Cheong-gang performed a duet with his audition mentor and rock vocalist Park Wan-kyu, touching the hearts of the audience.
The two have maintained a connection since they met as mentor and mentee on MBC's 'Birth of a Great Star Season 1' in 2011. Baek Cheong-gang shared, "I have also been active as a singer in China and took a long vacation," updating watchers on his recent activities, and he joked about Park Wan-kyu, saying, "It was malicious criticism that brought us together, and it was worse than mere criticism," drawing laughter.
Park Wan-kyu selected the song 'Rain and You' from the OST of the movie 'Radio Star' for Baek Cheong-gang. He expressed, "Baek Cheong-gang gained significant popularity 14 years ago but was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery. Throughout that time, he must have still had a longing for the stage, like the main character in 'Radio Star.'"
In fact, Baek Cheong-gang was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2012, leading him to pause his entertainment activities, and after undergoing a total of six surgeries, he was declared cancer-free in 2014. Following his return to the stage of 'Immortal Songs' in a healthy state in 2019, he reunited with his fans.
Baek Cheong-gang expressed, "Many people find Park Wan-kyu intimidating, but in reality, he is warm-hearted and often emotional. I am one of the few younger siblings who can call him 'hyung.'"
In response, Park Wan-kyu remarked, "I also experienced an unintended hiatus for over 10 years. I feel a kinship with Cheong-gang," adding, "His voice may be delicate but is strong. He doesn’t have to worry."
