The Tving original series 'Shark: The Storm' showcased the essence of real survival action.
The Tving original series 'Shark: The Storm' (written by Min Ji and directed by Kim Geon) had all episodes released on the 15th. Following Tving's first original movie 'Shark: The Beginning,' based on the legendary action webtoon, 'Shark: The Storm' returned as a six-part series after four years, delivering thrilling action with an expanded universe and intense developments. Most notably, the action synergy between Kim Min-seok and Lee Hyun-wook received praise, and the impeccable teamwork of 'Usol Family' members Bae Myung-jin, Lee Jung-hyun, Park Jin, and Jung Da-eun maximized genre enjoyment and captivated the audience.
'Shark: The Storm' begins with Cha Woo-sol (played by Kim Min-seok) starting to dream anew after his release from prison. For a moment, the hopeful and peaceful daily life is interrupted when a storm, represented by Hyun Woon-young (played by Lee Hyun-wook), hits Cha Woo-sol, as predicted by Jeong Do-hyun (played by Wi Ha-jun), who remarks, "Bugs are going to be a problem." Hyun Woon-young learns that Cha Woo-sol had previously defeated 'Bae Seok-chan' (played by Jeong Won-chang). Having been running an illegal fighting league, he sought to draw Cha Woo-sol into the ring. This was the beginning of a fierce storm. After Cha Woo-sol declined the offer, Hyun Woon-young threatened him by kidnapping his long-time friend and mentor Yoon Ji-hee (played by Jo Yun-seo). Thus, Cha Woo-sol entered the fight designed by Hyun Woon-young to protect his loved ones. However, Lee Won-jun (played by Bae Myung-jin), Han Seong-yong (played by Lee Jung-hyun), and Jeong Sang-hyup (played by Park Jin), who became comrades beyond prison mates, stood by Cha Woo-sol.
Hyun Woon-young was not an easy opponent. He brought storms of crisis that seemed to engulf everything Cha Woo-sol had, moving as if he were playing a game. Ultimately, after suffering the pain of losing a friend, Cha Woo-sol awakened fearsomely. The 'Usol Family,' now joined by Lee Won-jun's sister Lee Yeon-jin (played by Jung Da-eun), prepared for the final confrontation with a fierce determination. As Cha Woo-sol broke down his enemies one by one, he finally reached Hyun Woon-young in the eye of the storm. Not merely to survive, but to endure fiercely for his friends, Cha Woo-sol emerged victorious, proving the difference against the 'absolute evil' Hyun Woon-young. The counterpunch completed by Cha Woo-sol, forged with 'blood, sweat, and tears,' was thrilling yet moving.
With the efforts of the 'Usol Family,' Hyun Woon-young, who had reigned as an 'absolute evil,' was shattered. Cha Woo-sol made up his mind to choose to fight on his own and ran again toward his dream of becoming a 'mixed martial artist.' Thrown into a harsh storm, Cha Woo-sol rose with his friends and grew once more. The Cha Woo-sol of 'Shark: The Beginning,' who was merely a weak boy, evolved splendidly in 'Shark: The Storm,' protecting not only himself but also those around him. Following physical growth, Cha Woo-sol achieved inner growth, and the confrontation with Jeong Do-hyun and Hyun Woon-young, which took place in prison, built anticipation for the next chapter.
'Shark: The Storm,' returning as a series, exceeded expectations. The diverse actions and character evolution unfolding on a broader stage amplified genre satisfaction. Particularly, the long narrative of Cha Woo-sol, who tirelessly advances through the unrelenting storm, was made possible by Kim Min-seok's multifaceted performance. Kim Min-seok completed the character with varied images, from a youthful appearance to one radiating masculinity. By distinctly expressing perseverance rooted in innocence, he crafted the Cha Woo-sol character embodying both heavy emotional acting and dynamic, realistic action.
Lee Hyun-wook, who opposed him, also caught attention with stylish action. As the ultimate villain dominating the league, he exuded a chilling sense of intimidation, keeping the tension high with his sharp movements that heightened immersion. Bae Myung-jin, Lee Jung-hyun, Park Jin, and Jung Da-eun shone with magnificent teamwork as well. The action sequences, which became even more dynamic alongside the strongly evolved characters, provided exhilarating catharsis until the end.
